Obituary of Jeanne Soong
Jeanne F. Soong, age 91, passed away suddenly on January 18, 2018. She was born in the city of Hangzhou in 1926 which since ancient times has the reputation of being the birthplace of some of the most beautiful women in China. Jeanne lived up to Hangzhou’s reputation..
She lived during a tumultuous time in China’s history – warlords, economic turmoil, Japanese invasion, and civil war between the Communist Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party. Jeanne married Tsai-Chen Soong who was an officer in the Chinese Air Force stationed in Taiwan. Jeanne showed true grit when her husband entered into a PhD program at Stanford University and she was alone in Taiwan with an infant son and a six year old daughter for a period of five years. The family reunited in the United States after Tsai-Chen Soong received his doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University in 1965.
Jeanne enjoyed life with family and friends in Seattle, Washington, and then Rochester, New York. She particularly enjoyed getting together with friends in the Chinese-American communities in Seattle and Rochester and was widely admired for her generosity and ability to make and keep friends. Jeanne had many friends and she possessed the rare ability to keep friendships for many decades even for friends who lived across the country or even in Asia.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Jeanne was a cancer survivor. Despite being in constant pain from complications of cancer surgery and a spinal disorder, Jeanne took remarkable care of her husband of 64 years as his health declined, especially during the last few years before he died. Jeanne’s significant health issues during her later years severely limited the type of activities she could enjoy. But Jeanne endured life’s challenges with great fortitude.
Jeanne is survived by daughter Zo Ann (partner, Charles R. Dagonese), son Zosan (Grace), and grandchildren, Chantal, Simone, Taylor, and Victoria. For more information about Jeanne, visit www.bartolomeo.com
