Obituary of Barbara Koons
Barbara Koons (Sperr)
Koons, Barbara A. of Greece. August 2, 2017. Predeceased by her son, John Carroll, brother, AJ Sperr and sister, Mary Ellen Maloney. She is survived by her devoted husband of 34 years, Ralph, her pride and joy, daughter, Hannah Rose Boo Koons and by her parents, Andy and Jean Sperr. In the tradition of the good Catholic family, she is also survived by several brothers and sisters. In no particular order of favoritism: Nancy (Michael) Iafrati, Jim (Karen) Sperr, Bill (Mary Clare) Sperr, Dan (Sandy) Sperr, John (Sheila) Sperr, Judy (Jeff) Bennett, Patty (Chris) Ryan and Katie (Jonathan) Krotz. She will be greatly missed by a multitude of nieces and nephews who were always allowed ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each felt that they were her individual favorite. Cindy Holden, Gene (Mary Ann) Koons, Bill (Karen) Koons and Laurie McKee all held a special place in her heart.
Growing up in an exceptionally large family and having to share a bathroom with 5 sisters, Barb learned how to share and became one of the most generous people we all knew. She gave willingly of her time, transporting kids everywhere when parents couldn’t and continued volunteering at Heritage Christian Stables even after her diagnosis. From Dad, she acquired an incredible love for the outdoors and spent a good portion of her day exploring the woods and creeks with the kids, riding horses with her sisters, hiking with her dogs, or supporting Hannah at horse shows. She made us promise not to use the word tightwad to describe her, so we will just say she learned to be incredibly frugal from Mom. She greeted you with a smile and was genuine when she asked how you were. She was always there on any occasion, except to bale hay on a 90 degree day, to help you out. She remained positive and strong throughout her entire illness right up to the end. She taught us all that even though life is full of obstacles and it can knock you to the ground, you get back up. Appreciate what you have because someone always has it worse.
The family would like to express extreme gratitude to the Wilmont Cancer Center at Strong for their compassion and support they showed during this difficult time. To send a condolence, visit www.bartolomeo.com.
