Greece: December 11, 2013 at the age of 92. Predeceased by her parents, Antonio Rose Perri; sister-in-law, Mary Perri. Survived by her brother, Michael Perri; nieces, Janice Perri, Jeanne Perri, Jennifer (Sam) Favata; many loving family and friends. Sera's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Atria Greece Palliative Care Team at Highland Hospital. Sera's Memorial Mass will be celebrated SATURDAY, December 28 at 9:30 am at Our Mother of Sorrows Church, 5000 Mt. Read Blvd. Sera was born in Rochester, NY in 1921 to Rose 7 Antonio Perri, Italian immigrants from Plantania, Calabria, Italy. Her brother Michael was born in 1924. In 1926, tragedy struck when Antonio contracted Tuberculosis and died, leaving Rose to raise Sera and Michael on her own. Sera developed a fierce sense of responsibility for her family. She watched over her mother and little brother while they lived in a small apartment in the Lewis Street neighborhood, on Rochester's East side. Sera's love and loyalty to her mother and brother were the focus of her younger years. With little money in the household, she was a devoted daughter, helping with daily chores including babysitting her younger brother. In her teen years, Sera enjoyed seeing movies with a few close girlfriends and listening to the radio and laughing with her brother and friends. Sera graduated from Mt. Carmel elementary school in 1938, but in order to raise money for the family, she had to leave school in the tenth grade so she could work for Stromberg Carlson during WWII. During WWII, Sera got a job on the assembly line at Stromberg Carlson. Here she made some lifelong friends and was always loved for her contagious laugh. Dutifully, her earnings were delivered to her mother so that she could provide food and shelter for the family. After she retired, Sera worked as a receptionist at the Dental office of Dr. Carl Montione. She enjoyed the company of his twin sisters as she answered phones and scheduled appointments. Although she knew many people, Sera's best friend was always her mother, Rosa. Above all else, Sera chose to stay with her mother throughout her life, taking care of her so she would never be alone. Sera was also an intergrale member of Michael's family which included wife Mary and their three children, Janice, Jeanne and Jennifer. Mary had come from a large Italian family who gladly embraced Sera as one of their own. She, with the many members of Mary's family attended the many baptisms, confirmations, marriages, birthdays and holidays each year. Most events we attended were in the festive Italian tradition including lots of people and lots of food and wine. Nevertheless, with this tradition comes lots of dirty dishes! Lucky for the rest of us, always helpful Sera would put on her red smock and tend to each and every dish until they were all dried and put away in their proper spot. Sera loved to cook. She would try many of her own recipes and watch cooking show after cooking show, amazed at the Chef's creation. Sera's favorite food was potatoes and she mastered mashed potatoes for each holiday. One year, on her 89th birthday, all party attendees decorated raw potatoes with paint and other materials, making "potato characters" which they wrapped up and gave to her as gifts! Once a week for many years, Sera would pack a special lunch for her niece, Janice who worked in downtown Rochester for the City government. She would take the bus to the office building and wait for Janice's lunch hour when they would eat together. Over the years, many people at the City got to know "Aunt Sera", as she cheerfully greeted them. Having a wonderful sense of humor, Sera would laugh and laugh, remembering scenes from sitcoms. She would also watch Dancing with the Stars, trying to guess who the finalists would be. Sera enjoyed reading People Magazine the Catholic Courier and Reader's Digest. In 2010, Sera, Michael, Janice, Jennifer and Jennifer's husband Sam went to Canandaigua Lake. That day, the sky was bright blue, the sun was shining and the weather was warm. Sera was mesmerized at the beauty of the water and the blue skies over the foothills surrounding the lake. She enjoyed and appreciated the simple things in life, never taking anything for granted. Aunt Sera was a generous, kind, and loving human being, whose gentle manner, sense of humor, and warmth were known to everyone who knew her. She will always be remembered this way.
