Doris was born on June 4, 1928 in Rochester NY. Doris always said it never rained on her birthday. Her parents were Alphonse Lowman (known as Al or Pa) and Julia Weisenberger. Al was born in Holland and immigrated to the US in 1907 along with his parents and siblings. He had about 14 brothers and sisters. Al was inducted into the service in 1918 for World War One and discharged in 1919. He became a citizen shortly after that and worked for the post office for many years. Julia was of German descent and lived in Rochester with her family. She had about 5 siblings. Her family was not wealthy but was not poor either. Doris's parents married when they were each about 40 years old. Doris was not the first born to Al and Julie. They had a daughter named Lucille who sadly passed away in 1933 of influenza and pneumonia. Had penicillin been invented at that time, she may have lived. Doris was 5 when Lucille died so she grew up as an only child. She lived much of her life on Atlantic Avenue and attended St John the Evangelist Church. She loved gardening, playing with her dolls and with her wagon. She had a dog named Pal. Doris attended East High School but had to quit to help support her family. At 16, she took a job at Eastman Kodak Company. She loved to dance, especially square dance and polka. She also enjoyed talking about politics. While working at Kodak, she met the father of her future husband. Art's father asked Doris if he could set her up for a date with his son who just returned from the war and didn't know many people. He knew the two would like each other. They met, fell in love and married in 1947. Art was 23 and Doris was 19. It was the greatest day of her life. They had a big wedding and remained married all their lives...almost 69 years. Doris had her best friend, Alice Bayer, as her maid of honor. They were lifelong friends who grew up just doors from each other and both had elderly parents. They were like sisters to each other and did everything together. They remained very close throughout their lives. Doris and Art had a good life together. In addition to dancing, they had a boat and would go boating on the bay. They moved into a house on Illinois street, had many friend and hosted many parties at their home including a Christmas Eve get-together. Doris was a member of a Rosary Society and attended St John's Church or St James' Church every Sunday. She also was very involved with Art's Lutheran Church. Doris liked going to movies, and watching Little House on the Prairie and talking to friends and family. They traveled extensively around the country and over to Europe several times. They spent many winters in Florida. In later years, she lived with her husband in Crimson Ridge Senior Home and Latta Road Nursing Home.
