Matt was born on December 7, 1966 in Rochester, NY to Joan Douglas Steward and grew up on Whitney Road in Fairport. He had 4 siblings and as a kid spent alot of time with his friends, riding dirt bikes, and playing hockey. He graduated from Fairport High School in 1986 and later earned his Associate's Degree at MCC. Matt worked at the University of Rochester for over 25 years working in medical waste, hazardous waste, and ultimately asbestos control. Matt married his spunky wife of 16 years, Jenn, just months before his 30th birthday at St. Charles Borromeo on August 16, 1997. They met while both working at Environmental Health Safety at the University of Rochester. After several years of "double dogs, no kids", they welcomed their daughter, Emily Anne on 6/30/05. Son, Jacob Mathew, arrived on 5/4/07. The days these children were born were the greatest days of Mathew's life. Matt's favorite activities always included his children. In February 2013, he took the family on a dream trip to Disney World and it was pure magic. He had been looking forward to working on his project car with them. He also enjoyed ice skating and boating with his family. Matt was a long-time Buffalo Sabres fan through thick and thin. He passed that allegiance on to his wife and kids. Family and friends would say that Matt was a tough nut to crack, but once you got past his gruff exterior, you would be blessed with a loving, honest, and loyal man. He loved and protected his family fiercely and cared endlessly for his friends. Matt was a loving father and husband and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
