Eleanor Scouten
August 3, 1923 ~ March 2, 2016

Rochester: March 2, 2016, at the age of 92. Pre-deceased by her husband, Edward L. Scouten; brothers, Eugene Carroll Powell; sister, Margaret Thomas. Eleanor is survived by her sons, Steve (Florisse) Scouten Jonathan (Patricia) Scouten grandson, Zachary Scouten; several great-grandchildren, especially Aidan Eldridge; niece, Barbara James; nephew, Paul Thomas.
Eleanor was the fourth child of Edith A. (DeBerry) Homer K. Powell, both college professors. After graduation from Adrian College (Michigan) in 1945, she was employed in the journalism field for several years. From 1949 to 1952, she took in-service training while teaching at the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint. She received her masters degree in deaf education from the University of Michigan in 1952. She later taught deaf children at the primary level in Detroit, New Mexico, Louisiana, Florida New York. While in Louisiana, she organized and supervised a preschool program at the School for the Deaf , where her husband served as principal. From 1970 to 1981, she supervised a similar program for preschoolers at the Rochester School for the Deaf (NY). Upon retirement in 1986, she and her husband moved to Frederick, where they volunteered as tutors for the Literacy Council of Frederick County. For many years, they also served as docents at the Historical Society of Frederick County. Throughout her life, she enjoyed travel, having visited all fifty states in the U.S. Foreign travel took her to Europe and in 1954, on a freighter trip around the world. In more recent years, she and her husband participated in service programs, teaching English in Poland, Crete and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. They also served as Cititzen Ambassadors in a deaf education seminar in China and Korea. A special thanks to St. Ann's Community staff on the 2nd floor (especially Anne) and Lifetime Care Hospice for the loving care shown to Eleanor and her family.
Eleanor's memorial service will be celebrated 11 am on Saturday, April 30th at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1040 East Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Ann's Foundation, 1500 Portland Ave, Rochester NY 14621 in Eleanor's memory.
