The life of Louis Gallo epitomizes the success story of an Italian who rose from meager beginnings to success here in the United States. Lou's parents, Stefano Angelina, emigrated to the Ellis Island from Caltanissetta, Sicily with their 3 children in 1910. Stefano his family were one of the many immigrants who came here in search of the American Dream. After Angelina's untimely death after the birth of Louis, Stefano placed him is St. Mary's Orphanage for safekeeping while he worked. After several years, Louis was returned to his father's care and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army and was recruited as a morse code technician. Louis traveled to North Africa and Sicily throughout World War II. After the war ended, he attended the University of Rochester on the GI Bill and continued his education at St. John's Law School in New York, graduating in 1952. Louis practiced law in downtown Rochester as a sole practicioner until 1971 when he and Frank Iacovangelo founded Gallo and Iacovangelo. Throughout these years, Louis never forgot his Italian heritage and became involved with the Caltanissetta Society. From the late 1960's until 1982, Louis helped to develop the Caltanissetta-Rochester Sister Cities program. The exchange program allows families and student from Caltanissetta to come to Rochester to live and visit. Lou and his wife Lucy often hosted these guests themselves, and mad trips back to visit their new friends in Italy as well. Louis helped many Italians become US citizens, assisting them with the paperwork and attending their swearing in. A bevy of these new citizens went on to work here at Hickey Freeman and Bond Clothiers. Louis was also a local interpreter for many Italians as he assisted them with translation of documents as needed. Louis had immense pride in his work as an attorney and had a well respected long career. He was quoted as saying: "I always had some ability to engage people, to put them at ease. People who come to attorneys are people in some distress, and they are looking for someone on whom they can depend, someone they can trust." Louis and his wife Lucy were married for 68 years and the proud parents of Dr. Louis S. Gallo Sandra Wilmot, as well as four grandchildren whom Louis loved and enjoyed spending time with. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
