Family Memories / Life Story of our wonderful Dad - Bob Myers Bob was born on December 11,1930 in Rochester, NY at St. Mary's Hospital. He was the oldest of four children and loved his parents and younger siblings dearly. He had a happy childhood growing up on Hampton Boulevard in Greece. He participated in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and took pride in his first job as a paperboy. He graduated from Charlotte High School where he was very athletic, playing basketball, baseball, soccer and track. Bob was popular in school and was Junior class president. He studied to be a HVAC technician and was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, working at Kodak for 36 years in refrigeration & air conditioning. After retirement from Kodak, Bob then worked full time at RG&E until retirement from there. After RG&E, he continued contract work at Temp-Press for a number of years. Bob was also very proud of his eight years of service in the Navy Reserves. Bob met his wife Helene on a blind date, and they married two years later at St. Stanislaus Church. Bob and Helene were married for over 66 years and had 3 children, Kath, Laurie and Rob. Bob was a very loving and terrific father to his children, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren and had a great affection for all of the family's pets and also wildlife. Bob and Helene had many adventures together. They took pleasure in traveling and vacationed in Florida, Canada, Jamaica, and enjoyed celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in England and France. Bob worked very hard, but he also knew how to have a lot of fun and was always up for an adventure, whether it was a seaplane ride over Buckshot Lake or a boat ride up the Genesee River. He built an ice-skating rink in the family back yard and put in a swimming pool for the kids to enjoy. He had a great time at the family Keuka Lake home. He was delighted to entertain family and friends on his boat and never turned down a request by the younger generations to water-ski or tube, being young at heart himself. Bob had many interests. He loved playing cards, and if you ever needed a euchre partner, he was your man. Bob was a lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills and was even able to watch a preseason game the day that he passed away. And for a guy who spent a lot of time catching fish, he did not eat many! He loved golfing (enjoying rounds up to 89 years old) and bowling, but most of all he loved his family and extended family. He also had wonderful friends and neighbors that he was close to. He was well-liked by all and easy to get along with. And he looked forward to his weekly breakfast routine with lifelong friends. Bob was an avid bird carver and bird enthusiast. Each carving was a work of art displaying tremendous skill and an eye that appreciated beauty. He was a member of the Genesee Valley Wood Carver Association and won several awards at their sponsored shows. And true to form, Bob generously gave his carvings to family members to enjoy in their respective homes, such as songbirds, woodpeckers, ducks, shore birds, and Helene's favorite, the great blue heron. And he always made time to keep his backyard bird feeders filled even when he had trouble walking in later years. Although Dad used to say "ask your mother" a lot, he was the solid rock of our family. He was a gentle and sweet man who enjoyed helping others. He was our harbor. He taught us in his quiet way about religion and was a parishioner at St. Lawrence Church with a strong faith in God. He was a very grateful and happy person and his gentleness & kindness were extraordinary. He accepted people as they are. When he could, he gave - that marked his life. He was a special man with a strong sense of humor and a perpetual twinkle in his eye. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
