Remembering Patricia:

Patricia “Pat” Murnin was born on November 11, 1942, in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. She grew up in Westchester County, raised by her loving parents, John and Helen Murnin, both dedicated educators. Sadly, Pat lost her father at a young age, leaving her mother, Helen, to be a guiding force in her life. Helen later moved to Florida, and Pat made it a priority to visit her every year.

Pat attended Pierre Van Cortland School, Croton-Harmon High School, and later SUNY Brockport, where she earned a degree in Physical Education and Health. Following in the footsteps of her parents, she pursued a career in teaching, demonstrating kindness, dedication, and a deep love for her students. She worked as a physical education teacher at Hilton Central School District, instilling a passion for sports and activity in countless young lives.

Pat married the love of her life, Edward Matarazzo, on July 8, 1967, after being introduced by her dear friend Anne. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two children, Ann Marie and Edward. As a family, they created cherished memories, especially during their summer vacations to Anna Maria Island, Florida. Pat loved the Gulf of Mexico, collecting seashells, and enjoying fresh shrimp straight from the boats.

Pat had a strong connection to her community, working in the Olde World and Nutrition departments at the Britton Road and Mt. Read Wegmans. Though she didn’t enjoy cooking or grocery shopping, she found joy in engaging with people through her work. She also served as a parents’ advocate for Greece Central Schools and volunteered at English Village School, always ensuring the well-being of children and families in her community.

A devoted parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church, Pat lived a life centered around faith, family, and friendship. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren, Haleigh, Ryan, and Maddi. She never missed a recital, concert, sporting event, or school function, always providing unwavering support and love.

Pat had many passions, including swimming, skiing, bowling, horseback riding, and watching sports. She was an avid fan of the NY Giants and the Rochester Rhinos. Standing at six feet tall, she played field hockey and basketball and even showcased her musical talents by playing the xylophone in her school band. Summertime, the ocean, and trips to a ranch in Arizona, where she could ride horses, brought her immense happiness.

Throughout her life, Pat surrounded herself with dear friends—Gail, Shirley, Ceil, Anne, Fred, and her cousin Peter—who remained close to her heart. She also shared a special bond with her sister-in-law JoAnn and her niece and nephews. Music of all kinds, television shows like Days of Our Lives and The Lawrence Welk Show, and magazines such as People and Good Housekeeping were among her simple pleasures.

Pat’s love extended beyond people to the many pets she cared for over the years, including cats, dogs, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice, and lizards. Her compassionate nature made her a beloved presence in the lives of both people and animals alike.

One of Pat’s greatest sources of pride was the legacy of education in her family. Alongside her mother, daughter, and granddaughter Haleigh, she was part of four generations of dedicated teachers. Her commitment to helping others, especially her family, never wavered.

Later in life, mobility challenges made things more difficult for Pat, but she faced them with resilience. She remained a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, always offering love and support to those around her. Her mother, Helen, had the greatest impact on her life, shaping the woman she became.

Patricia Matarazzo lived a full and beautiful life, touching the hearts of everyone she met. Her kindness, dedication, and unwavering love for family and friends leave a lasting legacy. Now at peace with God, she will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved her.
