Remembering Jim~

James “Jim” Guck was born on August 13, 1955, in Rochester, New York, to Raymond and Edna Guck. Raised in a hardworking household—his father employed at a machine shop and his mother at a factory—Jim grew up understanding the value of dedication, resilience, and family. He was one of five siblings, sharing childhood with Cheryl, Raymond, Deborah, Linda, and Thomas in a home filled with laughter, stories, and strong family ties.

A proud graduate of Spencerport High School, Class of 1974, Jim went on to earn his Millwright Apprenticeship Certificate, setting the stage for a career marked by skill, commitment, and integrity. He built a successful career at General Motors, where he worked for many years as a skilled millwright. Known for his work ethic and dependability, Jim was respected and admired by colleagues and supervisors alike. Even after retiring from GM, his drive didn’t slow down—he continued to work at Delphi, putting his experience and skills to use and staying active in the workforce.

Jim had a zest for life that was impossible to miss. He was outgoing, energetic, talkative, and funny—a magnetic presence in every room. Known for his incredible memory and his gift for storytelling, he could captivate a crowd with tales of his adventures, peppered with wisdom, humor, and a twinkle in his eye. A self-described “thrifty” man, he took pride in getting the best deal, and he was never shy about sharing a tip or two on how to do the same.

Life’s greatest blessing came when Jim reconnected with his high school classmate, Theresa M. Giullari. From that moment on, the two were inseparable—for nearly 40 years, they built a life together rooted in love, laughter, and shared adventures. Together, they blended their families: Jim’s daughter, Christina “Crissy” Bergmann, and Theresa’s children, Scott and Sara Grapensteter, creating a close-knit, loving unit.  Jim cherished every moment spent with his beloved grandkids—Madison Bergmann, Audrey Smeaton, Benjamin Smeaton, and James Grapensteter—filling their time together with laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories.

Jim embraced the outdoors and lived for time spent in nature. He found joy in fishing, hunting, golfing, and bowling. Whether competing in a league, heading out on a Myrtle Beach golf trip, entering an annual fishing tournament with lifelong friends, or enjoying solitude at his cherished hunting cabin, Jim’s love for the outdoors was ever-present. Summers at Oneida Lake with family and friends were a highlight of every year, and Cape Cod held a special place in his heart.

He was a devoted member of both the Hemlock and Honeoye Gun Clubs and took pride in participating in local leagues and community events. Jim never sat still for long—he was always on the go, eager to explore, connect, and live every day to the fullest. He loved concerts and live music, rarely missing a chance to enjoy a good band and a great time with friends.

Jim’s personality was as large as his heart—honorable, jovial, and always willing to lend a hand. He built lasting friendships wherever he went and nurtured them with genuine care and loyalty. His legacy is one of laughter, love, adventure, and deep-rooted wisdom. Whether sharing a fishing pole, a beer, or a story, Jim made everyone feel like part of something special.

Above all, he loved his family fiercely. He cherished his role as father and grandfather and relished every moment spent surrounded by those he loved most. Jim’s life was rich in experience, friendship, and meaning. He didn’t just tell stories—he lived them. And in doing so, he inspired those around him to do the same.
