Remembering Ann Marie~

Joyful Educator, Musical Mentor, Family Heartbeat

Born on April 19, 1967, in Rochester, New York, Ann Marie Murphy lived a life filled with music, laughter, and love. Her warmth lit up every room, her voice lifted every heart, and her kindness left an unforgettable mark on everyone lucky enough to know her.

Ann began her teaching career at Frederick Douglass Middle School, where her passion for music and dedication to her students quickly shone through. She later brought her talent and joyful spirit to Ada Cosgrove Middle School in Spencerport, where she continued to inspire young voices with her signature energy and enthusiasm. Eventually, she took the helm of the vocal music program at Spencerport High School, a position that became both her passion and her platform for changing lives.

Ann inherited a thriving program and turned it into something truly extraordinary. Under her leadership, her treble choir and high school choruses consistently earned top honors at local and national competitions. But more than the trophies and applause, Ann’s greatest pride came from her students—many of whom she inspired to pursue music education and the performing arts. She never stopped cheering them on, always keeping in touch, always remembering each name and story.

Family was the heartbeat of Ann’s life. She was the devoted wife of Michael Murphy for 31 beautiful years, and the proud mother of her cherished daughter, Cecilia. She loved nothing more than going to Broadway musicals with Cecilia, singing along and soaking in every magical moment together. Ann’s joy was contagious, her laugh unmistakable, and her love unwavering.

She was the beloved daughter of Oreste “Ernie” and Sherry Lee Capone, and carried the strength and grace of her dear Nana, Anna Capone. Her bond with her mom, Judith Capone, and her sisters, Tricia and Christine, was filled with love, loyalty, and lots of laughter. Ann was also a proud and adoring godmother to four lucky souls, a role she embraced with all her heart.

Ann’s chicken French and her famous “sauce” were legendary at every family gathering—a time she treasured most. She loved her big, beautiful family, and her home was always full of warmth, food, music, and laughter. She adored sunflowers, doted on every dog she met, and never passed up a chance to celebrate others.

Ann Marie Murphy was more than a music teacher—she was a cheerleader, a comfort, a guiding light, and a lifelong friend to so many. Her legacy lives on in every note sung by her students, every tradition shared around the table, and every heart she touched with her kindness and song.
