Name: Charles R. Salvaggio Life Dates: 3/13/1932 - 9/21/2011 City Of Birth: Rochester, NY History Charles R. Salvaggio, Jr. 79, passed away on September 21, 2011 in Hudson, Florida. Born in Rochester New York, Charlie and his wife moved to Hudson in 1995 and were members of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Predeceased by his parents; Charles Mary. He was the beloved husband of Marian for 52 years. Charlie is survived by his wife Marian (Armstrong), daughters; Charlene (Tony) Davis, Caterina (Kevin) Buckert, and son; Charles Damien; 6 grandchildren; sister; Ann Marie (Sam) Platania; brother-in-law; Leonard (Carrie) Schmeer. Charlie lead a remarkable life. In 1947, at the age of 15, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve and in 1950 enlisted in the Marine Corps receiving the rank of Sergeant. He served in the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged in 1953. He was a Life Member of the Marine Corps Association and the American Legion and a member of the Marine Corps League and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He served as Commander of The Cooper Marine Post #603 and Commandant of the Holiday Detachment #567 Marine Corps League. He served as Captain on the New York State Guard and was President of the 21st Regiment Association. In 1958, Charlie joined the Rochester Police Department and was assigned as a patrolman for 3 years. In 1961, he was transferred to plainclothes duty and was promoted to Detective in the Detective Bureau in 1962. In 1967, he was promoted to Sergeant and was named S.W.A.T. Squad Commander one year later. In 1971, after receiving specialized training, Charlie formed the Rochester Bomb Squad and was appointed Squad Commander. In 1977, he was named Commanding Officer of the Police Training Academy. Charlie retired from the Rochester Police Department in 1979 after 21 years of service. He began his next career in 1979 at Eastman Kodak and retired in 1988 as Corporate Security Training Assistant. He continued with Kodak as a security consultant until 1990. He is the former Rochester Chapter Chairman of the American Society for Industrial Security and created their annual college scholarship award program. In 1990, Charlie was hired as a contract employee by the U.S. Marshal Service, Western, NY and in 1991 was sworn- in as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal. He retired from the U.S Marshal's Service in 1996 and was presented with the coveted U.S. Marshal's Star. Charlie was president of the Rochester Police Area Law Enforcement Officers Association for five years and his leadership in uniting police and fire department retirees was the catalyst for the annual NY State Pension COLA increase. In 1991, he was elected to the American Police Hall of Fame and in 1996 was presented with the Anthony L. Fantigrossi Memorial Award. He was a member of various organizations including; the Police Locust Club, Rosewood Club, a Trustee of the Police Benevolent Association and a Life Member of the International Association of Bomb Technician's and Investigators. His volunteer services included; the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the VA Clinic, the Toys for Tots Program, Chairman of Trikes for Tykes and an AAPR Driver Safety Instructor. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #2284 in Florida. During his career, Charlie was the recipient of 150 medals, commendations and plaques. He touched the lives of many through his faithful dedication and service to his family, country, community and charitable organizations. His life exemplified the characteristics of honor and valor. He was a loving husband and father who taught each of us the value of honesty, respect, and integrity. Charlie will be dearly missed. Services Family will be present to receive friends on Saturday October 8, 2011 between 11-2 at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm with Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to HPH Hospice; 12107 Majestic Blvd, Hudson, Florida; 34667 in memory of Charlie.
