We once saw a line in an obituary that truly described our father's character. So we begin by sharing that same line with you: "Domenico was a true gentleman as well as a gentle man." No words could describe him better! He had a quiet strength, was compassionate, never spoke ill of anyone else, loved his family deeply, and always had encouraging words to give to all of us.
We have such wonderful memories of him gardening in his flower beds and vegetable gardens. The backyard was in bloom with lilacs, hydrangeas, geraniums, and my dad's beloved rose garden. From his vegetable garden, our family rarely bought canned goods from the grocery store because of his plentiful bounties each summer.
Dad was also an incredible bocce ball player. Spot on in almost all of his shots! He and his friends actually petitioned the town of Jupiter, FL, to build a bocce ball court in Carlin Park that is still used today by many vacationers.
Woodworking was another pastime in our home. We had china cabinets, television stands, dressers, chairs, wine stands that were made from his loving hands. He could look at an object and design it without a pattern.
And who could forget his incredible wine-making skills! Much laughter was often heard from our basement 'fruit cellar' during that season. From grandpa D'Angleo helping him to his son Louis learning the process, to our beloved Uncle Mike pressing those grapes. We smile when we think about the 'taste testing' that occurred each year and can still envision the tremendous number of bottles that came from each and every wine season.
And if you're truly Italian, you would have seen a cured ham (prosciutto) hanging in our garage every winter season in Irondequoit. It was always a hard item to try to explain to our non-Italian friends when they came to our house. Yet, the expression on their faces was priceless!
Our father had six siblings: four brothers and two sisters. The sibling before our dad was also named Domenico and died during infancy. So, two "Domenico's" now grace heaven. And from his humble beginnings, he worked with his brothers to build a home for his parents in Tocco Casauria, Italy. He joined the Italian Army and learned how to cook there. Many of our family meals could have been featured in local restaurants.
Our father leaves us with memories of trips to the board walk in Atlantic City to family gatherings on Taft Avenue, Willow Creek Lane, and Jupiter, FL. We learned life lessons that will be handed down to our children. Gratitude fills our hearts for the incredible life we had with this wonderful man.
Domenico is predeceased by his parents Benvenuta Luigi Iovoli; his brothers Domenico, Rudolfo, and Adriano; his sister Licia Coccotelli. He survived by his wife Paolina (D'Angelo), his children Annette (Sean), Donna, Louis (JoAnn); grandchildren Austin (Danielle), Maxwell, Spencer, Colton, Alexa, Olivia, and Sophia; his sister Maria (Antonio) Forte and his brother Alberto Iovoli, both of Italy; many nieces and nephews both in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, and France.
We wish to thank the staff at ParkRidge Living Center (The Wegmans Cottages). Our special friend Mary Beth was his nurse practitioner and provided him with the most loving care possible. The entire staff had a deep love and incredible respect for our father. We wish to extend our gratitude to all of them for making all of his days there full of love and compassion.
Donations in Domenico's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. At this time, there will be no calling hours or funeral mass. A celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
