He enjoyed NASCAR events and collected railroad memorabilia. Donald was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1978 where he was a communication specialist. Donald's memorial visitation will be held Friday from 4:00-7:30 PM at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane. A remembrance service will follow visitation at 7:30 PM. Donald E. Newberry Jr grew up in Greece, NY. Jay was the third child in a family of four, Barbara Pfleger was oldest, Marjorie Rossetti was the next sibling, and Thomas was the youngest. There was about five years between each of them. Jay was born on April 2, 1954 in Rochester, NY to Donald Miriam Newberry. His mother insisted he be called "Jay" and not Junior or any other nickname. You always knew when someone called for him that did not know him very well because they referred to him as Don! Then his family would have to ask, "which Don? The older one or the younger one?" As a young boy, Jay was very inquisitive and spent most of his time reading. He played the trumpet in the school band. As a teenager, he joined the Greece Explorere Troop 400 as an Auxiliary Police Scout. This gave him good experience for his future life's work. After graduation from Greece Arcadia high school, Jay joined the US Army and trained to be a communcation specialist with the Special Services Unit in Berlin. After his Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1978, he came home to continue his technical training and applied to RIT. He received his Associates in Applied Science Degree from the College of Business at RIT. Jay then joined the State Troopers in 1982. He stayed on as patrol officer until he retired in 1991. During his retirement, Jay enjoyed collecting railroad memorabilia. He collected many old maps of the state of New York showing rail lines and canal routes throughout the state. He also took flying lessons and passed his first solo flight test. Jay enjoyed watching NASCAR racing on TV during his down time. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
