Remembering Elvio ~
Elvio Augusto Pasquarella was born in Rochester, NY, to Nicola and Antoinetta Dilena Pasquarella on August 31, 1935. They were Italian immigrants who came to America in the 1920s. When Elvio was born, Nicola was working as a clerk. They lived at 110 Romeyn Street with their three older boys, Antonio (Tony), Mario, and Remo. The family moved around the west side of Rochester, eventually settling into a house at 140 Villa Street when he was 8 years old.
Elvio went to Number 30 school for elementary school and then Jefferson High School where he was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team and was homeroom president. It was in 9th grade homeroom where he met the love of his life and future wife of 70 years, Josephine DeFilippo. They had their first date when they were 16 years old where they saw the movie Singing in the Rain.
Elvio started working at Eastman Kodak when he graduated from high school at age 18, working in the Hawkeye Plant. Engaged in 1954, Josephine and Elvio were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Plymouth Avenue on November 26, 1955. It was a snowy day. The reception was held at the Eagle’s Club. They honeymooned in NYC. Their first home was an apartment on Locust Street. On May 9, 1958, they welcomed their first son, Stephen Thomas and on August 13, 1960, John Nicholas completed the family. The Pasquarella’s lived at 152 Villa Street, 2 doors down from Nicola and Antoinetta. In 1972 they moved out of the city to 116 North Greece Road where they lived for 7 years before moving to 61 Keswick Road in Irondequoit. Elvio and Josephine lived there for 41 years until they downsized and moved to a town home on Mill Landing in Greece.
In 1984 Elvio became a grandfather for the first time after the birth of his first grandchild, Kristen, daughter of son Stephen and his wife, Karen. Michael soon followed and then Stephanie. In 1991 twins Daniel and Nicholas were born to John and Patti. In 1993, Alex completed Stephen’s family, who was born on Elvio’s 58th birthday. Jessica is the youngest grandchild, born in 1994.
Following his retirement from Kodak in 1990, he then worked for RCSD as a bus driver for 10 years.
Josephine and Elvio did a lot of traveling. They visited England, Paris, Italy, New Orleans, New England, Colorado, and California. They spent many winters in Florida. Elvio was an avid golfer. He loved playing it and watching it on TV. He liked meeting with his friends at the Peppermill Restaurant.
In 2013, Betsy joined the family when she and John were married. In 2015 Elvio and Josephine became great-grandparents with the birth of Andrew, son of Michael and Francesca. Later that year, great granddaughter, Riley, was born to Stephanie and Eric. In 2020 Theodore (Teddy) was born to Kristen and husband James and then in 2022, Rowan joined that family.
Elvio and Josephine spent many hours working in their yard on Keswick Road and he loved sitting on the patio by the pool drinking a cold Corona. They also enjoyed cooking together with him as Josie’s sous chef. Their shrimp sauce is a family favorite.
