Remembering Jimmy

James T. Scally, lovingly known as “Jimmy,” was born on December 8, 1956, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Gerald and Mary Scally. He was the third of four boys in the Scally family, with his older brothers David and Jerry, and his younger brother Kevin rounding out a household full of energy, love, and deep family bonds.

Jimmy grew up in a nurturing environment shaped by the dedication of his parents. His father, Gerald, was an electrical engineer who worked in the aerospace industry, while his mother, Mary, was a nurse who devoted her career to caring for developmentally challenged children. Their compassion, strength, and commitment to family had a profound and lasting impact on Jimmy’s life.

From a young age, Jimmy showed a special connection to animals and was happiest when surrounded by his beloved pets. He had a gray poodle named Suzette, a playful toy poodle named Mocha, and a loyal dog named Brownie. These companions brought him joy and comfort and were a constant part of his life.

Jimmy’s early education began at Harvey Rich School in Cleveland, Ohio, after the family relocated. He later attended Brockport High School, where he continued to grow and thrive. Jimmy had a love for art—especially painting and coloring—and he found peace and pleasure in expressing himself creatively. Another favorite pastime was fishing, a hobby he shared with his father, often enjoying quiet moments together by the water.

A lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills, Jimmy never missed a chance to cheer on his team. Music was another great joy in his life. He enjoyed listening to the classic hits of Michael Jackson and the Bee Gees, and he found special delight in hearing his brother Kevin play the guitar.

Jimmy worked at Lifetime Assistance Workshop, where he found both purpose and pride in his contributions. He also built strong and meaningful relationships with his friends and caregivers at his group home, where he was known for his kind demeanor and his trademark phrase, “Oh, be nice.” It was a simple reminder of the gentle and compassionate way he saw the world.

For Jimmy, nothing was more important than family. The love and support of his parents, brothers, and extended family shaped the man he became—kind-hearted, joyful, and always genuine. His life was a testament to the power of love, patience, and simple pleasures.

Jimmy Scally’s presence brightened the lives of those around him. He will always be remembered for his warmth, his humor, and his enduring love for the people and animals who meant the world to him.
