Gates/Boca Raton, FL: Passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 after a short battle with lung cancer. Predeceased by his parents, Carmel and Anna M. (LoBrutto); daughter, Mary Ann Karns; sister, Margaret; Brother, Sam; step-father, Anthony Sciangula; step-sister, Patricia; brother-in-law, Michael Petrillo; sister-in-law, Catherine (Joseph) Civiletti. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary K. (Petrillo) Scibilia; daughters and sons-in-law, AnnaMarie (Louis) Brongo, Kathleen (Gerald) Cameron, Susan (Terry) Horne, Margaret Vogel, Christine Scibilia (Martin Carroll), David M. Karns Sr.; brothers, William of FL. and Edward (Hedy) Scibilia; sisters-in-law, Teresa Petrillo, Maude Scibilia of FL. and Ann (Robert) Brongo; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many good friends both here and in Florida, especially his pals in the "Saturday Breakfast Club" and his lunch companions at Antonetta's Restaurant.
John was a retiree of the Monroe County Board of Elections, a Veteran of the US Army, a past member of the Italian American War Veterans, a past member of the Monroe County Board of Supervisors and a local musician for many years. Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 7-9 at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane (between 390 Long Pond Rd.) John's funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM at St. Jude the Apostle Church (4100 Lyell Rd.) Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. John was born on March 12, 1927 in Rochester, NY to Carmel Anna and grew up on Jay Street. He attended School 17 and Jefferson high school. He valued a catholic education even though he had not attended catholic school himself. All 6 of his children did attend Catholic grammar and high schools. After high school, John served 2 years in the US Army. He later married his wife Mary K. at St. Francis of Assisi church and they were married for 66 years.
John always enjoyed family reunions, Christmas Eve, and family vacations in Ocean City, MD. Some of his favorite activities included fishing, golf, hunting, and bowling. John was a musician who played the accordion, and played with the Freddie Beck Band. He was active with the Italian American War Veterans and the Knights of St. John's while attending Holy Family parish. John had lunch every single day with his friends at Antonetta's Restaurant and breakfast every Saturday morning at Stoney's. He was also President of the Homeowners Association of Barwood in Boca Raton, FL.
John was a NY Yankees fan, Buffalo Bills fan, and loved watching golf, baseball and football on television. He also was a big Frank Sinatra fan.
Family and friends would best describe John as someone who was social, always wanted his family around, traditional, loved the outdoors, easily expressed himself, was generous, and always enjoyed going out to dinner.
He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
