"Jack" Shea died on December 2, 2011, in Rochester at the age of 87. Jack was born in Rochester at St. Mary's hospital on March 15, 1924 (the Ides of March), as the youngest son of James Patrick and Ida Shea (of Irish and German ancestry respectively), and he grew up on Canary Street on the west side of Rochester. He attended Holy Rosary parochial/elementary and middle school and John Marshall High School, where he graduated in 1941. Jack was the second youngest of 5 children, with siblings Dorothy McGinn who currently resides in Rochester and the now deceased Edward Shea, Jimmy Shea, and Betty Wahl. Jack was a multiple sports star at Marshall High School, playing on the school's basketball, baseball, and golf teams. He made headlines for sinking a hole in one at the city high school golf championships, and he made the All-City second team in golf and All-City third team in basketball. He then embarked on a semi-pro sports career, playing for semi-professional basketball team the Atlas Wreckers (Atlas Demolition Co.) and semi-pro baseball team the Ridge Clippers (for Ridge Construction). He also played for the Eastman Kodak industrial league basketball and fast pitch softball teams, where he played center field alongside the legendary pitcher "Shifty" Gears. Jack was especially outstanding in basketball, where he was known as "the speed merchant" in the local press due to his tremendous ability to accelerate, drive to the hoop, and score. He played semi-pro basketball for ten years. Jack also served with the State Guard for three and a half years after high school. Jack had a 42 year career with Eastman Kodak as a printing planner in the Printing division, taking early retirement in the early 1980's. Jack married Phoebe Ellen Good, originally from Indiana and a graduate of Indiana University, after they met at Kodak where they both worked. They settled in 1952 into their home of almost 50 years at 237 Rye Rd. in Greece where they raised five children. Jack was an avid landscaper on the large (0.75 acre) property, and he particularly loved planting trees and flowers. He was known for having the only home on the street that he had cleared all the way to the back edge of the property, into the woods, building sports facilities there for his children including a skating rink, basketball court, baseball field, badminton court, swimming pool, and golf range. He also built a religious shrine which became quite famous in local Catholic circles as a site where hundreds of worshipers gathered on holy days to say the rosary together under the leadership of Jack as the organizer with support and prayer leadership by local priests. Jack was a long-time parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Greece, and sent his children to the elementary school there. An extremely devout Catholic, Jack attended daily mass at St. Johns for many years, and he attended nocturnal vigils on a monthly basis at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Jack had a very special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and he said the rosary on a daily basis, oftentimes with his entire family. Jack is survived by his wife, Phoebe E. Shea, daughter Nancy, and sons Scott, Randall, Jerry, and John. Jack loved the wonderful nursing staff at Monroe Community Hospital (nursing home), and the family is very grateful to those folks and MCH for their support and nurturing care of Jack in his last years with us.
