Webster/Port Charlotte: Suddenly on March 21, 2017. Joe is predeceased by his father & mother Samuel J. & Carmella (Zarcone) DiJune. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 62 years Gracy A.(Viterise) DiJune;children, Hollis (Brian) Downes & Samuel J. DiJune; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Jeff) Waterman, Kathryn (Ryan Humphris) Downes, J. Michael DiJune and Samuel J. DiJune Jr. In addition, he will be dearly missed by Carolyn (Sam) Tornatore, Kathy (Ed) DiGabriele, Kathy (Jack) Fleming and Mary Lou DiJune; one aunt;, several nieces, nephews & cousins. He is also survived by several close and very dear friends, some of whom he has known since grammar school. As owner of DiJune's Liquor he was the 3rd of 4 generations to own and operate a business located in the 10th ward. Joe's visitation will be Thursday, March 30, 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Funeral Home, 1411 Vintage Lane (Between 390 & Long Pond Rd.). Joe's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday March 31, 9 AM at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Parkway, immediately followed by his Entombment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make a contribution to the charity of your choice. Joe was a patriot. Originally, he enlisted in the Marines. After being admitted into the Marines the government had decided that Joe didn't meet their minimum age requirements and he was soon thereafter honorably discharged. That didn't stop Joe. In 1952 Joe reenlisted in the Army. He served overseas as an infantryman in the Korean Conflict. While serving his country proudly, Joe received the Bronze Star for valor. In 1954 Joe was discharged he quickly returned home to Gracy and the two were married 10 months later. Joe was a graduate of Jefferson High School. It was at Jefferson High School that Joe met Gracy Viterise. They started off as high school sweethearts. The two never looked back and were married January 8, 1955 at Holy Apostles Church. Their family grew to include two loving children and 4 adoring grandchildren. The DiJune Family had a business presence in the Driving Park/Dewey neighborhood for decades. In 1962 Joe began what would become a long-standing business still serving the community today in 2017, DiJune Liquor. Joe was hard working and dedicated. He was most proud of his and son Sam's, effort to build a new store in 1999. He proudly oversaw the many details of building a new location from the ground up. Sam recently remarked that "dad still kept an eye on the business." While in Florida, Joe would check in on the stores security cameras, offering Sam words of advice. "Grace" was by far Joe's most used saying. He enjoyed watching Mash and the History Channel. He also looked forward to going to the theatre with Gracy. Family was always the most important thing to Joe. He looked forward to Sunday dinners. He loved, and at the same time, was challenged by Christmas. The thought of getting together with family for the Holidays was great, however the demands of the liquor store usually meant that Joe would be pretty tired. Joe was a member of the Caltinasetta Social Club and a proud member of the Combat Infantry Veteran's group. Joe had patience and a sense of attention to detail. This was evident during his free time. It would not be unusual to find him re-caning a chair or wire sculpting. Joe always seemed to have a smile on his face. His sense of humor and dry sarcastic nature was welcomed by family and friends. He will be remembered for being loyal, reliable, generous, artistic, creative, resourceful and as a good friend and an even better husband. Those who knew and loved joe will miss him!
