April 22, 2013. Predeceased by her parents, Salvatore Julie (Palermo) Piedici. Survived by her brother, Patrick (Debbie) Piedici; nephews Patrick (Andrea) Piedici Jr, Christopher (Katie) Piedici; Anne Messina; Twinc; Sheila; Laurie; great-nephew, Caden; great-niece, Kyla; several aunts, uncles, cousins, Godchildren extended Godchildren, and many dear friends. Karen was a Recreation Director for the City of Rochester.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 7-9 PM. Karen's funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 AM at Holy Apostles Church, 7 Austin St., Rochester. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Karen was born November 21, 1950 to Salvatore Julie Piedici and grew up in the city of Rochester before the family moved to Greece, NY. Karen was a tomboy and always played baseball with the boys. She attended Greece Arcadia High School and then went on to earn an Associates Degree at MCC. She earned her Masters Degree in Physical Education at Brockport College.
Karen began working for the City of Rochester Parks Recreation Department in 1967. She briefly retired in 2005 only to come back to work that very year until the winter of 2013. She also worked as a Physical Education teacher at Most Precious Blood grade school from 1976 until its closing in the early 90's. Karen was always on the go and didn't sit still for long. Her most valued prize while at work was her every day realization that she could make a difference in children's lives.
Karen will be remembered as always having a Pepsi in her hand. She enjoyed coaching at various levels. She coached women's softball at a highly competitive level. Karen coached youth sports to include boys softball and girls CYO basketball. She enjoyed working in the garden around her home.
She was a New York Yankee and Cincinnati Bengals fan. She loved watching TV. "her shows" that were going to be missed HAD to be recorded. She most enjoyed watching Golden Girls, Bonanza, Ponderosa, Big Bang Theory, Andy Griffith, Two Broke Girls, NCIS, CSI Miami, and Criminal Minds. Karen's favorite actors actresses included Clint Eastwood, Bette Midler, and Barbara Streisand.
Karen was known for her crazy Christmas gifts: boys would get Christmas boxer shorts and ladies would get funky socks. She enjoyed vacationing to the Balloon Festival in AZ and visiting a Dude Ranch.
Family and friends would best describe Karen as having a great sense of humor, being outspoken, generous, social, thoughtful, and being a caregiver. Mostly, they would say that Karen approached everything in life with her own unique style. Karen always took pride in mentoring children. She was always able to earn the respect of children from all walks of life.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
