Kathleen M. Walsh

October 21, 1935 ~ October 12, 2024

Kathleen “Kay” Walsh, née McMahon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on October 12, 2024, just shy of her 89th birthday.

Kay grew up on Hobart Street in the 19th Ward in Rochester, and lived most of her adult life in Greece, NY. She spent her last few years in the St. Ann’s community at Chapel Oaks and, briefly, Cherry Ridge.
Kay became a registered nurse after graduating from the St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1957, a source of great pride for her loving parents, James Emmett and Mary (Kavanagh) McMahon. While at St. Mary’s, Kay made many life-long friendships. She then worked in public health, and later for the American Red Cross. In between, she was a dedicated wife and mother of four boys, and a pillar of the St. John the Evangelist Church community in Greece, where she also made many close friends. She eventually became the undisputed World’s Best Grandma. Her grandkids’ memories of the nurturing, fun-filled hours they spent with her will remain with them as a sustaining gift. She was a warm-hearted mother-in-law to her sons’ amazing wives, a fond aunt to her nieces and nephews, and an affectionate sister to her wonderful siblings and their spouses.
From October 1935 to October 2024, Kay was a beam of light who brightened countless lives, from her family, to her patients, to her many friends, as well as to strangers she interacted with on trips, in stores, or during the course of her volunteer work at Unity Hospital in Greece and Geva Theater. Kay was a devout Catholic who understood that her religion taught her to love and accept others. She inherited this deep sense of compassionate faith from her mother, and developed it herself through her life-long efforts to understand people better, often simply by asking them questions and listening to their answers with sincere interest. She also inherited her mother’s keen instinct for having fun. Her friendliness and sense of humor are the stuff of legend, even if some of her funniest lines were unintentional.
Kay was a voracious reader who loved going to the library and attending book clubs. She appreciated a wide range of culture, whether it was music at the RPO or by Josh Groban, movies at the Little Theatre or at Tinseltown, or TV shows from Seinfeld to Downton Abbey. She was an enthusiastic gardener, flower lover, and incorrigible foliage thief. But she was happiest at family get-togethers, where she could dote on her grandkids, laugh (and laugh and laugh) with her siblings and children, and take joy in the beautiful community she was central to creating and maintaining.
Kay was predeceased by her husband, Dick Walsh, who died in 2013, and is survived by her sons Tim (Mary) Walsh, Greg (Alena) Walsh, Chris (Maureen) Walsh, and Brian (Erin Murphy) Walsh, her brothers Tom (Pat) McMahon, Jim (Barb) McMahon, Tim (Mary) McMahon, and her sister Geri (John Godwin) McMahon, her beloved grandkids, Emmett, Mark, Mary Kate, Claudia, Heidi, Cassie, Cyrus, and many nieces and nephews.
As much as we will miss her, we take comfort knowing that it will always be impossible to think of her without smiling.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Saturday October 19 at St. Ann’s Chapel, 1500 Portland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14621. In lieu of calling hours, the family will be happy to greet  Kay’s friends and well-wishers in the lobby of St. Ann’s Chapel between 10-11am, immediately before the Funeral Mass.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Red Cross at https://www.redcross.org/local/new-york/western-new-york/ways-to-donate.html#:~:text=To%20support%20the%20American%20Red,(716)%20886%2D7500
