History
Rev. Lawrence Vincent Murphy, a priest of the Diocese of Rochester for more than half a century, died today at Rochester General Hospital. He was 77 years old. Father Murphy, affectionately called "Murph" by his wide circle of friends and known for his ready smile and cheerful demeanor, was born in Walworth, New York, in 1931 the son of Vincent and Susan Murphy. Father Murphy, whose home parish was St. Michael`s in Newark, attended St. Andrew`s and St. Bernard`s seminaries, and was ordained a priest on May 31, 1958.

Services
Calling hours for Fr. Murphy will take place at Bartolomeo Perotto Funeral Home, Inc., 1411 Vintage Lane on Sunday October 26th from 1-4:30 PM. Father will lie in state later on Sunday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park at 6:30 PM with Evening Prayer at 7:30 PM with Bishop James Moynihan of Syracuse presiding. On Monday, October 27, Father will lie in state from 9-11 AM with his funeral liturgy at 11 AM with Bishop Matthew H. Clark presiding.
Additional Information
He served in a variety of leadership roles during his long ministry. After his ordination, he was assistant at St. John the Evangelist in Greece until 1962, then assistant at Sacred Heart Cathedral until his appointment as spirtual director of St. Andrew`s Seminary in June 1965. In the late 1960`s, he served as spiritual director of Becket Hall and vocations director for the Diocese, and also was a member of the faculty of King`s Preparatory. In 1970, he was appointed diocesan director of vocations, and in 1971 was named assistant pastor of St. Mary`s in downtown Rochester. In the late 1970`s and until the mid 1980`s, Father Murphy ministered to the sick as chaplain at Genesee and Highland hospitals. In 1985. he was appointed pastor of the Church of the Resurrection, Fairport, and then as pastor of Holy Rosary Church in Rochester in 1993. In 2000 and until his retirement in June 2001, he served as pastor of Most Precious Blood concurrent with his leadership at Holy Rosary.
