Remembering Maria ~

She was born and raised in Cianciana, Sicily, and grew up with her parents and four siblings. She came to the United States in 1966, two years after her father and brother had settled in LeRoy, NY, preparing a home for her parents, herself, and her three siblings.

A few years later, at a dinner party, she was introduced to her late husband of 53 years, Giovanni Provenzano. They married in 1970 and settled in the village of LeRoy.

Soon after, her parents, Giuseppe and Caterina, moved back to Sicily with her youngest sister, Filipina, to reunite with her older sister, Francesca, in Cianciana. Her brother, Giuseppe, and sister, Angela, remained in LeRoy.

Maria took English classes and learned to sew, eventually mastering her craft while working at Hickey Freeman in Rochester, NY. After starting a family, she opened a seamstress shop out of her home. She was a devoted mother and wife with a passion for cooking, making sure there was a hot meal on the table for her family every night. She worked tirelessly, keeping an immaculate home while sewing for customers and raising three children.

By the age of 40, she began a lifelong battle with cancer, which she fought with strength and resilience on four separate occasions. She was a warrior with an unbreakable will to survive, knowing her family needed her strength and care.

During her years of remission, she enjoyed traveling, gardening, shopping, and going to the casino, but it was spending time with friends and family that she cherished most. She adored her seven grandchildren, attending their sporting events and being present for every milestone. Whenever they were near, her joy shined through like a brilliant ray of light.

Maria was a woman of many talents, with exceptional skills in the kitchen and a masterful creative touch. She showed her love through delicious meals and constant hospitality. She welcomed everyone with generosity and compassion, and she was endlessly selfless. She attracted many friends, and her family kept close, as her positivity was contagious and she was a true joy to be with.

She lived and passed on her own terms. Her only concern in her final days was to ease the pain and sorrow she knew her passing would bring to those she loved. Family always came first—even in the end.

Maria touched so many lives and will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
