Mary A. Marsh
August 10, 1931 – April 25, 2025
Mary A. Marsh, born on August 10, 1931, in Rochester, New York, lived a life grounded in faith, family, and love. The daughter of Marie Antoinette Matroniano and Portogallo Matroniano, Mary was raised in a home where spirituality and compassion were cornerstones. Her mother, a dedicated seamstress and homemaker, and her father, a hardworking employee of Rochester Gas and Electric (RGE), nurtured her faith from an early age, shaping the thoughtful, loving woman she would become.
Mary grew up to be a pioneer in her own quiet, determined way. She broke barriers as the first female drafter at Kodak, a role that not only showcased her intelligence and skill but also her quiet strength and trailblazing spirit. It was during her time at Friden, where she also contributed actively to the FRA club, that she met the love of her life, Dayton Marsh. They married in March of 1983 and shared a deep, faith-filled bond until his passing, anchored by love, prayer, and shared values.
Mary’s life was rich with spiritual devotion and service. A lifelong Catholic, she gave generously of her time and heart to her parish. She served as an altar server, joined the bell choir, led prayer groups, and held the role of president of the Rosary Society, through which she inspired others with her unwavering belief and leadership. Her rosary was never far from her hands or her heart.
Those closest to her describe Mary as loving, spiritual, selfless, warm-hearted, and supportive. These qualities radiated through her every role—devoted mother, cherished grandma and great-grandma, beloved aunt, sister, and loyal friend. Her family was her heart, and she poured her soul into being the very best for them. Mary valued time spent gathered around a table—whether playing dominoes, cards, working on crossword puzzles, or enjoying the company of those she loved.
Her joyful spirit shone especially in her friendship with Marian Collard; together, they shared countless laughs and a spiritual sisterhood that deeply enriched Mary’s life. Her faith also came alive in her appreciation for the arts and culture—especially her love for Andrea Bocelli’s music, and classic films like Ben Hur, The Quiet Man, and The Ten Commandments. In later years, Korean dramas became a favorite pastime, reflecting her curiosity and open heart.
As she aged, Mary faced the difficult emotional challenges of growing older—especially the feeling of no longer being in control and the worry of being a burden. Yet, even in these times, her grace, humility, and deep love for others never waned. Her family remained her joy and purpose until the end.
Mary A. Marsh’s legacy is one of love, faith, and family. She was deeply loved, profoundly respected, and had a lasting impact on all who knew her. She taught by example—how to live with intention, how to pray with devotion, and how to love without limits. Her spirit continues to live on in the lives she touched, the prayers she whispered, and the family she cherished so deeply.
