Mary Anne Cullen
October 23, 1958 ~ December 28, 2021

Mary Anne passed away on December 28, 2021, at the age of 63, surrounded by her son Jimmy, along with her siblings. Predeceased by her parents Jack & Libby Cullen; grandparents Lloyd & Vera Cox and James & Elizabeth Cullen. Mary Anne is survived by her son James (Marcela) Cullen; grandchildren Tyler & Lauren Cullen; brothers Joe (Yvonne) Cullen, Mike (Tammy) Cullen; sisters Ellen (Jim) Mandel, Paula (Joe) Guck, Suzanne (Butch) Coglitore, Kelly Cullen-Walsh; nieces and nephews - Jesse, Louis, Natalie, Shane, Jonathan, Tyler, Estina, Joey, Janelle, Valerie, Megan, Kristina, Ben, Tori, Max, Jack, Bobby, Danny, Shelby, and their respective spouses.
Mary Anne was raised in Greece, NY, the oldest of seven children and true matriarch of the family. She raised her son Jimmy whom she cherished as the single-greatest blessing in her life until she became a grandmother to Tyler and Lauren; then she considered her blessings - bountiful.
A graduate of Greece Arcadia High School with Honors who went on to complete a degree from Rochester Business Institute (RBI), and later obtained her degree as a paralegal. As a teenager, her career started as a receptionist for St. Charles Borromeo Church. After completing her degree from RBI, she went on to work for the US Attorney's office where she made genuine friendships that lasted until her death. Mary Anne left the US Attorney's office to work in private practice for Hon. Frank Geraci Jr. and Hon. Jonathan Feldman.
In her late twenties, Mary Anne developed neurologic symptoms that began to challenge her motor skills. By the age of 35, she had been diagnosed with "ataxia" a rare degenerative neurological disease which had progressed to the degree that she could no longer work and continue the job she loved. Her life with ataxia started with a cane, progressed to a walker, and then a wheelchair for more than two decades. As if ataxia was not enough, Mary Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer in her mid-forties and suffered two reoccurrences; the last was metastatic breast cancer five years ago. The diagnosis of ataxia and then breast cancer were devastating and beyond the scope, any one person should have to face in their lifetime; however, Mary Anne, met them with Irish grit and sheer determination. While Mary Anne's longevity surpassed all expectations, she would not be destined by diagnosis or timelines; she left this world on her terms and timing.
Prior to the onset and progression of ataxia, Mary Anne loved to travel. She was known for her impeccable handwriting, razor-sharp attention to detail, and someone with the memory of a steel trap door. Her family often referred to her as "Martha Stewart" for she was an excellent cook, host, and seamstress. It took ingenuity and helping hands over the years that allowed Mary Anne to attend her son's graduation from the University of Miami, and later travel to meet her first and then her second grandchild in Florida. Trips to embrace special moments as a grandmother took place until they became too difficult for her; thankfully, technology allowed her to stay connected.
Back home in Rochester, Mary Anne was always up to a Sunday night dinner with one of her siblings and their family, or a "sissy" road trip for lunch; she attended countless events for her many nieces and nephews in celebration of their life's special moments. Above all else, the one thing Mary Anne truly lived for - the love for her son Jimmy. The two of them shared a special bond and incredible love; no matter the challenge, the distance, or now the physical loss of her beautiful presence, the two of them will remain forever connected by a love that transcends all barriers of time and space.
The family would like to acknowledge a special group of friends and their families who remained devoted to Mary Anne: Hon. Frank Geraci Jr., Hon. Jonathan W. Feldman, David Rothenberg, J.D., Susan Oogjen, and the late Hon Michael Telesca. The family would also like to like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the home aides who provided Mary Anne with dignity, compassion, and care.
