Services Richard's graveside service was private in Holy Ghost Cemetery. Additional Information Church: Our Lady of Good Counsel - Ernestine Street in Rochester, New York, many years ago Religion: Catholic, but not practicing Friends: Many friends, all over the world! His special dog, Pepe, that he loved for many years ("a true, mutual friendship"). Rick also had cats over the years, one in particular whose name we remember was Chien, which means "dog" in French - Rick's humor! Favorite Music: Ed Ames, Edith Piaf, Classical, Show Tunes, etc. Enjoyed whistling Kay Keyser's version of "Who Wouldn't Love you", as a kid. Awards and Honors Received: As a 3 year old boy, he won first place in the Annual Junior Playground Costume Contest at Maplewood Park. His costume was "Illustrating Time to Retire". His photo was in the local newspaper on August 9, 1929, alongside the second and first place winners. Activities Enjoyed: Friends remember playing board games after school on Raeburn Avenue, going to the movies at the West End Theatre - 10 cents on Friday nights, eating Jackson-Bailey ice cream cones for 5 cents on the way home. Read many books and felt an affinity to ancient Egypt. Loved watching old movies. Used to love to walk the boardwalk and Ocean Grove to "people watch". Enjoyed going to bars with friends and having sing-a-longs, enjoyed going out to eat and to the movies, went to New York City for a few plays. Later in life he was a real homebody and some health issues also kept him close to home. Special Accomplishments: When he was younger, Petter Lindstrom was studying at the University of Rochester and his wife, Ingrid Bergman, was in town skating in Highland Park. She gave Rick a few skating lessons - what a great memory! He talked about the time he was a cook during WWII and, at the Battle of the Bulge, he and other cooks had to stop cooking to get their guns to fight the Germans. Occupation: Rating Clerk and Bank Teller Employer: Stern's Trucking in NJ, etc. Service: WWII - U.S. Army - Europe - 63rd Infantry Division Speaking of the service - this is an e-mail that Rick sent to his sister, Jean, "By chance, yesterday I came across a site which included the 63rd Division and I checked out a few entries. Then I had a dream last night. Then Bob sent the info on this other side for the 63rd Division. Spent the past couple of hours viewing the 63 pages of photos on that site. Sure brought back a lot of memories. Didn't see the names of anyone that I could recall. Learned that our regiment was finally awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for our action in the Colmar pocket in southern France, in the winter of '44-45. We were attached to the 3rd Div., at that time. They received the award on February 20, 1945. We were awarded it in 1986!!!!! Had a really weird dream last night. At age 81 I was drafted back into the Army. I was issued new tan uniforms, but everyone ran around in white long johns. Went through a long, long chow line and all we were served were hamburgers and at the end of the chow line a female officer in a white t-shirt handed out cookies. All I was worried about was whether or not I could put my 63rd Infantry (my old division) on my uniform. Then I awoke!" Special Family Functions: Enjoyed attending holiday dinners and weddings Hobbies: Computer, E-mailing Friends and Family on a daily basis, Crafts, Ceramics, Embroidery, Needle Point, Bargello. Avid reader. Collected some pieces of art. Loved to cook and still made some of his mother's recipes from long ago. Loved to shop at Wegmans in New Jersey. Loved drama. Most Enjoyment in life: Friends, family, keeping in touch via e-mail. Was good at remembering holidays and birthdays through e-mailing special e-cards. Enjoyed his hour-long monthly telephone conversations with his sister, Jean, and much shorter telephone conversations with his brother, Bob. How would we describe him? - What his friends and family had to say: "Kind and loving friend, supportive, funny." " Lifelong friend since we met in kindergarten 79 years ago". "A kind, considerate, loving soul. Always looking for and usually finding ways to cultivate the friendships that were so precious to him. What little he had in material wealth he made up for through his generosity of spirit. He appreciated what he received from others. He gave of what he had freely and loved unconditionally". "Kind hearted, happy and positive". "Touched my life in many ways". "I miss his daily e-mails so much, you never knew what you were going to receive!". "Intelligent, curious, honest, loving, friendly, encouraging, warm, tender, generous". "He was proud of his appearance (well, he was kind of cute!)". "I will miss my only "Harold" uncle, his daily e-mails and wonderfully animated e-cards. I will especially miss the love I could always feel he was sending my way." Uncle Dick made me a white ceramic manger scene which contains approximately 30 different pieces. When I put it up this Christmas, I will think of him and be forever grateful that he was a part of my life.
