Richard R. "Rick" Wells GREECE - On February 5, 2020, Rick was welcomed into the arms of the Lord. Rick is predeceased by his parents, Gardner Barbara Wells. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia "Ginny" (Ranalletta) Wells; daughters, Jennifer (Brian) Button Laurel (Jason) Burchell; grandchildren, Hailey Button, Alexa Nicotina Avery Burchell; sister-in-law, Patricia Newman; niece, Amanda Newman; many cousins dear friends. Rick (W2RW) was a long time member of American Radio Relay League, Rochester Amateur Radio Association Rochester DX Association. Rick's life story will be shared during his visitation Sunday, February 9th, 1-5 PM at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane (Between 390 Long Pond Rd.). His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, February 10th, 9:30 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, immediately followed by his burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Richard was born in Utica, NY February 29, 1948 to his parents Gardner Barbara Wells. In his early years Richard took a liking to ice skating, electronics and music. He was very musically inclined and began playing the piccolo at a very young age. During this time his love of ice skating at the tender age of 5 manifested itself into performing in ice skating shows. During Richard's grade school years, Gardner had taken on a teaching position at St. Lawrence University and moved his family to Canton, NY. Gardner's newest job opportunity at SUCO Oswego brought Richard and his family to Oswego, NY. He then spent much of his grade school and high school years there. Richard's love of music expanded during this time. He began playing the electric guitar. Soon, he found himself playing in bands. Richard was very intelligent. His restless nature found himself building his own electric organ and TV. He received his ham radio license at the age of 12, his call sign was W2RW. That passion would stay with him for the rest of his life. Through his love of amateur radio, he remained very active in many clubs performing civic duties the whole time. If that wasn't enough, he began tutoring college students in math during his high school years. His college years found him attending Clarkson University. While there he obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering. Like most times in Richard's life he kept himself busy. He was a member of the ROTC, played in a band and most importantly he married the love of his life Ginny at the end of his junior year in 1969. Their family began in 1971 with the birth of their daughter Jennifer. Shortly after Richard had graduated from college in 1973 his second daughter, Laurie was born. During his college summers Richard's hard work and handiness found him working in construction. After graduation he served for a brief period in active service and he then went onto serving his country as a reservist for 8 years. Richard never avoided hard work. He was very dedicated to work and doing the best he could for the company he worked for. The first 15 years of his career Richard worked for Delco. He then went on to work for Digital Equipment Corporation/Compac/HP. He ended up retiring from SMP a local company in Rochester where he was the lead storage architect. Times and accomplishments in Richard's life that he fondly remembered included, spending summers growing up with his grandparents in Myrtle Beach, SC. His work accomplishments included many technical certificates and achievements. He was blessed enough to have won an award from work that hade sent he and Ginny to Hawaii. In the rare moment he was not busy Richard was a fan of the Buffalo Bills, enjoyed watching skating shows and looked forward to reading technical journal and reference books. He will be remembered for being, kind, gentle, intelligent, loving, having a dry sense of humor and always being on the go. He was a big kid at heart, he was a proud grandfather, he received great joy playing with his grandkids and making faces at and with them when they were young. Richard was truly a unique man, with varied passions and abilities. He left his mark wherever he went, he will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
