Remembering Roger ~

Roger W. Boily, beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, public servant, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and kindness that touched countless lives.

To know Roger was to know someone who genuinely cared. He had an extraordinary gift for making people feel important. He remembered the details of people’s lives, asked thoughtful questions, and took a sincere interest in everyone he met. Whether you were a lifelong friend, a former student, a neighbor, or someone he had just met, Roger had a way of making you feel seen, valued, and appreciated.

Born on January 9, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Roger grew up in Merrick on Long Island. He was the eldest son of Lillian Murphy and Wilbert Boily, a World War II Navy veteran and Citibank banker who was involved in the early development of information technology. Roger was just sixteen years old when he lost his mother, an experience that helped shape the compassion, resilience, and strength of character that would define his life. He was later blessed by the love and support of his stepmother, Dorothy, and remained close with his younger brothers, Richard and Douglas, who later would provide Roger with four nieces.

Roger attended Catholic elementary school in Merrick and graduated from Mepham High School before enrolling at SUNY Brockport, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education. It was there that he met Judith Welling, the love of his life. They married on September 1, 1962, beginning a partnership that would last more than six decades and serve as the foundation of the family he cherished above all else.

Education was Roger’s calling. He spent 28 years as an elementary school teacher in the Greece Central School District, teaching at Long Ridge, Holmes Road, and Craig Hill elementary schools. He was a fantastic teacher, mentor, and role model whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. Even after retirement, he continued to support future educators by supervising student teachers for SUNY Brockport.

Roger’s dedication to serving others also led him into public service. He served on the Greece Town Council representing the Third Ward from 1975 to 1989 and later as Town Supervisor from 1989 to 1997. He loved the Town of Greece and was deeply committed to making it a stronger, better community. His involvement extended to many organizations, including the Greece Republican Party, the YMCA, the Greece School Board, where he served as President, Greece Rotary Club, and Hope Lutheran Church.

A lifelong volunteer, Roger believed that serving others was one of life’s greatest responsibilities. He dedicated countless hours to Hope Lutheran Church, the Special Olympics, the Greece Food Shelf, Two Doors, where he tutored local students, and provided transportation for senior citizens. Helping others was never something he did for recognition, it was simply who he was.

While Roger was proud of his work as an educator and public servant, his greatest source of pride was always his family.

Roger and Judy raised two sons, Jeffrey Michael and Stephen Roger, who admittedly provided their parents with a few headaches along the way but brought them immeasurable joy. Roger was their biggest supporter, greatest teacher, and most dependable source of encouragement.

Nothing made Roger happier than being a grandfather. He never missed an opportunity to tell someone about his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Whether he was attending sporting events, concerts, musicals, school activities, or other extracurricular events, Roger could always be found cheering from the sidelines.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Judith; his sons, Jeffrey Michael (Elizabeth Ascroft) and Stephen Roger (Michelle Ashton); and his beloved grandchildren: Sarah (Emily), who are expecting Roger’s first great-grandchild; Calvin (Krysta Tomaszewski); Ryan (Sabrina Stephens); Rachel; and Joshua (Emily Badders). Roger loved watching his family grow and looked forward to every new chapter in their lives.

Roger enjoyed a rich and active life filled with friendships, travel, and community. He played softball for more than 30 years, enjoyed golfing with friends, loved discussing politics and current events, and remained a devoted New York Giants fan throughout his life. He and Judy traveled extensively, visiting Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Greece, France, and many other destinations. They spent winters in Myrtle Beach after retirement, traveled with close friends, and faithfully returned to Long Island each year to visit family.

Roger’s circle of friends was vast. Through his work, church, community involvement, and public service, he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. It seemed that no matter where he went, Roger would run into someone he knew, and if he didn’t know them yet, he soon would.

Roger’s legacy is found in the family he adored, the students he inspired, the community he served, and the countless acts of kindness he extended throughout his life. He taught by example that leadership begins with service, that success is measured by relationships, and that family is life’s greatest blessing.

Everywhere you go in Greece, you are likely to meet someone whose life was touched by Roger Boily. That may be the truest measure of a life well lived.

He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, trusted friend, respected leader, and a man whose kindness left the world a little better than he found it.
