One of four boys, Sam was born on February 15, 1919 and grew up on Joiner Street. As a youngster, he liked boxing, cross country, and was a member of the Webbs. Sam graduated from Edison Tech High School and then served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in Oregon and Ithaca, NY. From 1940-1945, Sam served in the US Army under General Patton. After serving his country, he went to work at Fashion Park as a tailor and joined the post office where he worked for 28 years. Sam met Toni when she came to the family home intending to meet someone else. They ended up both standing up in the same wedding and began their courtship thereafter. On October 4, 1947, Sam married Antoinette "Toni" Feola at St. Patrick's church in downtown Rochester. Their son Anthony was born May 21, 1950 and they lived on Fulton Avenue until they moved to the Charlotte neighborhood. After Sam retired, he lived in Apopka, FL. Sam always enjoyed the Cammarata Family reunion, Wednesday night concerts at the shore with his family, and was very devoted to his wife, son, and grandchildren. Some of his other favorite things included reading and watching movies such as Gone with the Wind, Random Harvest, and Four Feathers. He also liked watching All in the Family and Sanford Son on television. Some of Sam's favorite things included Frank Sinatra, reading books with a flare of criminal and war stories, doing word search puzzles and traveling all across the country and to Europe, Spain, Portugal, Italy, England and France. Sam liked cooking and said "there were none better than his own". He was a fan of the NY Yankees, Cleveland Browns, Boston Celtics and Joe Lewis. He also respected Sugar Ray Robinson as the best pound-for-pound fighter. Family and friends would best describe Sam as someone who was intelligent, creative, witty, strong-willed, and patriotic. He was a trivia master and spoke eloquently with a wide vocabulary. He will be greatly missed.
