Sam was born, Tuesday, October 3, 1933 in Rochester, NY. His parents, Robert Michelina Paternico raised their family on Spencer St. in the Jones Park Neighborhood. There they raised Sam, Gerald Frances.
He is remembered during his grade school high school years as being a good but sometimes mischievous young man. He graduated from Jefferson High School. During his years there he was a member of the wrestling team.
After a chance meeting at a party where Sam met Vivian the two went on to date and were married June 27, 1959 at Corpus Christi Church. Their family began and they had 4 children of their own, Julie, Robert, Steven Lisa.
Sam was hardworking and dedicated. He began working for the City Water Authority. During the change from city control to the Monroe County Water Authority Sam was one of the few who continued. He retired in 1991 after over 37 years of service.
He lived a life that placed importance on some of the simple things. He believed in doing right by others and that in doing so, others would do right back to him. He never had a bad word for anyone, he was loved and respected by family, friends and co-workers.
Sam loved his family. He supported his children's activities. Holiday dinners, family vacations, travel to Las Vegas and FL. with Vivian, spoiling his grandkids and family dinners. Sam was nimble around the kitchen. The only thing he loved more than cooking was eating! When one meal was finished, he was already planning the next one. Saturday was time for cold cut sandwiches for lunch and Sunday night was frittata's, made from the leftovers.
Sam enjoyed watching his sons play football. He was a football baseball fan. His favorite teams included the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NY Yankees. He enjoyed games of chance and going to the horse races. His love of music was varied, he could listen to most anything across different genre's and time frames. Over the years his record collection had grown to a considerable size. Sam kept up on current events, he enjoyed watching the news and he also looked forward to reading biographies.
He made everyone feel welcome. His children's friends always looked forward to spending time at the Paternico's house. Sunday mornings were special. Afterall, he was the patriarch to the Corfu crew and they always got together over coffee or breakfast. In recent years Sam began keeping a journal. His only regret was that he had not begun that sooner.
To anyone who knew Sam, he was, happy, fun loving, well liked, generous, loving, had a sense of humor, always had a smile and was well liked. His belief in doing well by others had his family adoring him and his friends anxiously awaiting the next cup of coffee and sharing of stories. He will be missed!
