A Life of Family and Friendship
For Sandy, life held many pleasures: a meal cooked for family, a game with her grandchildren, a trip with friends, and familiar traditions that brought everyone together year after year. Proud of her Irish heritage, Sandy filled her days with family, friendship, creativity, and service to her community.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Philip, and their children, Cheryl (Jim) Thayer of North Carolina, Thomas (Laurie) Mattle, and Michael (Christina) Mattle. For many years, Sandy and Phil also served as foster parents, opening their home to children from infancy through their teenage years. When her children were in school, Sandy took an active part in their world as a PTA president, Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, and CCD teacher.
Her commitment to the community extended beyond those busy family years. Sandy worked for the Greece Central School District for 25 years before retiring. She was also a life member of the Greece Ridge FD Ladies Auxiliary and served as its secretary for many years.
Travel and time away with loved ones became enduring family traditions. Sandy and Phil enjoyed exploring with friends, whether by car or on bus tours. The family’s cottage on Cayuga Lake, which they had for 32 years, held a special place in her heart. Each March, she looked forward to Myrtle Beach with family and friends. For 60 years, a highlight of the summer was a week at Delmonte in the Pines Resort in Canada, shared with their family and many friends.
At home, Sandy enjoyed reading, crafts, ceramics, knitting, and music. An excellent cook, she loved preparing food for others, especially her family. She and Phil enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees, and she was always ready for games and cards, particularly with her grandchildren. Her friendships included Tuesday morning ceramics at Cher’s Clay Comer, mah jongg with her Madison Place group, and lunches with grammar school classmates from St. Anne School.
Above all, Sandy treasured her grandchildren: Kimberly Collins, Jessica (Hunter) Hampton, Thomas (Manuel) Bandini, Tyler Mattle, and Cory (Kamillah) Thayer. Her great-grandchildren, River Lee and Ryleigh Hampton, and Isabella Thayer were precious to her. Thursday night Zoom gatherings with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren offered time for games and catching up-a way to stay close and share in one another’s lives across the miles.
