Sherri D. Matthews

February 12, 1958 ~ October 12, 2024

Born in: Titusville, PA
Resided in: Greece, New York

Sherri D. Matthews passed from her earthly body into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the young age of 66.

Sherri was born February 12, 1958 in Titusville, PA, the youngest and only daughter of three to Harry and Betty Himes. She was 16 and 11 years younger than her brothers Dan and Tom, respectively, traveling, camping, and spending much of her time as a child with her parents and their friends. Sherri came to know Jesus as her savior at the age of 10 when she was at church camp. We are so thankful for her relationship with Him, as it was the beginning of faith for the rest of her family. Psalms 103:17-18 says, “…the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children – with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.”

Sherri was raised in the quaint town of Youngsville, PA, where she was “backdoor” neighbors to her eventual husband, Alan Matthews. Sherri and Alan dated through college and were married on March 7, 1981 and settled in Warren, PA. Sherri was a loving wife to Alan for 43 years. They started a family in 1983, after moving to Gasport, NY, and welcomed their “Christmas Gift”, Nathaniel (Nate) A. Matthews, and in later years, two wonderful daughters, Kathleen and Kristen completed their family.

Sherri graduated from Youngsville High School in 1976 and went to Clarion University and received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and later continued to further her education to receive her Master’s in Elementary Education from Alfred University. She loved working with children in and out of the classroom. Her passion for seeing little ones learn, grow and enjoy life continued through her career and into retirement where she was able to spend many happy days with her seven young grandchildren.

To know Sherri was to love her. She had a contagious smile and laugh that she shared with others each day. Sherri was generous and kind, willing to give to anyone in need at a moment’s notice.

Sherri started showing signs of younger onset dementia around 60 years old. For the majority of her time post diagnosis, she was able to enjoy her family, going camping with Alan, caring for her toy poodle Cali, playing with her grandchildren and taking every opportunity to dance with her kids. She was fiercely loved and cared for till her last breath on earth.

Sherri was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Betty Himes, brothers Daniel (Louise) and Thomas (Trudy) Himes. She is survived by her husband, Alan, children Nate (Nicolle) Matthews, Kathleen (Matt) Brady, and Kristen (Corey) Malone, and seven grandchildren, Marlowe (11), Nolan (10), Nessa (8), Camille (8), Nevelyn (6), Celia (4), and Nixon (3).

Viewing will be held 4:00-7:00pm on Thursday October 17th at Bartolomeo & Perrotto Funeral Home located at 1411 Vintage Ln. Rochester, NY 14626. Her funeral will be celebrated 10:30am on Friday, October 18th at Northridge Church 2052 St. Paul St. Rochester, NY 14621 and interment with the family at Heritage Hill Cemetery in Arkport, NY.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hildebrant Hospice Care Center, 2652 Ridgeway Ave, Rochester, NY 14626, which provided a caring and loving environment for her and her family in her last few days.
