Penfield: August 26, 2017. Tom is predeceased by first wife,Thelma Kanellis; parents, Nicoletta Gus Kanellis; sister, Nicoletta Boardway. He is survived by his wife Sandra Kanellis; children, Linda Michael, Janice (Timothy Park) Kanellis, Gary (Cathy) Kanellis; step-children, Jeffrey (Shawn) Markin, John (Jeanne) Markin, Cindy (Steve) Friedman, Teri (Kevin) Dey; 17 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Tom's visiting hours will be Tuesday 3-7 at the Funeral Home, 1411 Vintage Lane (Between 390 Long Pond Rd.). His Funeral will be celebrated Wednesday 10:30 AM at the Funeral Home, interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to VOA, 214 A Lake Ave, Rochester NY 14608 or to Breast Cancer Coalition, 1048 University Ave., Rochester NY 14607 in Tom's memory.
Tom's was born on October 17, 1935 to Augustus Nicoletta Kanellis in Fulton, NY. He grew up in Oswego with his sister, Nicoletta and was known for playing practical jokes with classmates on many teachers.
During his youth, Tom was an avid fisherman enjoyed duck hunting. Even though Tom was born in the US his primary language that he spoke was in fact Greek. He learned English once he attended school. Like most of Tom's life he quickly adapted and mastered English and soon found himself at the head of the class.
Tom had a sense of humor. If you gave him a Chemistry set he would invariably find a way to explode/damage/change whatever was in the vicinity of the Chemistry set.
After high school, he joined the Air Force in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1962 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was involved in the Cold War and flew many missions from Greenland over Russia and into Turkey.
He later earned his Bachelor Degree in Engineering from Syracuse University. During his years on campus Tom found himself working Electrical jobs to support himself through college.
He began his career with Kodak working various positions in Electrical Engineering, Research and Management where he was well respected by his co-workers.
Tom had 3 children, Linda, Janice Gary, with his first wife, Thelma which whom he was married to for 35 years. He remarried Sandra and they lived in California for the last 11 years.
Tom and Sandra made many happy memories during their time together. He also enjoyed having pets and his favorites were his cats, Patches Samantha. Tom loved to travel and took many cruises with his family. He traveled throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Greece. Tom enjoyed visiting relatives in Athens with who he had spent some of his school years with.
Tom's hobby was dancing and he belonged to a Singers Club and a Veterans Club in California. His favorite sports teams were the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills and the Syracuse Orangeman. Gary fondly remembers his favorite team competing against Tom's. It was always a spirited time for the two of them spending time in-front of the TV of in the stadium.
Tom enjoyed cooking, some of his favorites included Indian food, soups and chili. His children fondly remember Saturday Night Pontillo's Pizza and Sundays found Tom over the Grill preparing dinner.
His most memorable quote was "Head 'em up and move 'em out." Tom was known to be a very handy man as he could fix anything electronical. He was always working on a project at home, fixing something and never cutting corners.
Tom's outlook on life was to "look forward to the future and never look back and have regrets." He was willing to help and support family, friends and neighbors. Tom will always be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The memory of Tom will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of his loving family and friends.
