Name: Thomas E. Shafer Life Dates: 4/4/1929 - 7/2/2004 City Of Birth: Rochester, NY Pre-deceased by Parents, Justin Catherine Kearns Shafer; son Robert "Bobby" Shafer; brother Richard "Dick" Shafer. Survived by His wife Pat Sullivan Shafer; children, Maureen (Greg) Smallwood, Linda (David) Colt, Michael Shafer, Mary Frances (Bill) Lieberman; grandchildren, DJ Colt, Nicholas Smallwood, Robbie Carpenter, Lucas Colt, Crystal Colt, Kendra Lieberman; great-grandaughter Airiana; brothers Phil Shafer, Peter (Jean) Shafer; several nieces and nephews. History Tom served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant in Japan during the Korean War. He continued his military career with the National Guard until his retirement as a Master Sergeant. He was a member of VFW Post 307, Patchen Briggs Post and a member of the American Legion. Tom worked for Rochester Telephone as a special services technician. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and of the CWA. Tom loved his family and was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. For over 25 years he enjoyed sharing his vacation home on Canandaigua Lake with his family and friends. Tom chose to be there with those closest to him for the last two weeks of his life. He had a "whim of iron" and was affectionately known as "Sarge" to those who loved him most. He could fix just about anything and was always ready to help anyone. Donations In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hospice of Rochester, 70 Metro Park, Rochester, NY 14623 or to Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Exemption Rd., Eva, NY 14456 in Tom`s memory. Services Everyone is invited to: VISITATION: Will be Tuesday, July 6, 2-4 7-9 PM at Bartolomeo Perotto Funeral Home, Inc., 1411 Vintage Lane (between 390 Long Pond Rd.). FUNERAL MASS: Will be celebrated Wednesday July 7, 9:30 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church. MILITARY BURIAL: Thursday July 8th at 11 AM at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. (Please meet at the Dewey Ave. Gate at 11 AM). LUNCHEON/WAKE: Thursday July 8th following the Military Burial. The luncheon will be at the VFW, Patchen Briggs Post, 54 South Union St. (between Park East Avenues). (454-7734)
