Remembering Tim:
Timothy E. O’Brien was born on November 5, 1949, in Rochester, New York, to Dan and Alice O’Brien. He grew up in a traditional family that was closely knit and very involved in their community. His father, Dan, was employed at Rochester Products, while his mother, Alice, dedicated her time to being a stay-at-home mom. Tim was raised in an environment that valued education and faith, attending St. Charles Borromeo Church and its school from kindergarten through eighth grade. He continued his education at Cardinal Mooney High School and Charlotte High School, fostering friendships that would last a lifetime.
Tim graduated from the Rochester Business Institute with a degree in Computer Science, laying the foundation for his future career. His work ethic was evident early on when he took on a large newspaper route for the Democrat and Chronicle, delivering papers for several years. This first job instilled in him a sense of responsibility and determination that he carried throughout his life.
Tim began his professional journey in the grocery business at Super Duper on Dewey Avenue. He later transitioned to Star Market until its closure, eventually finding a long-term position at Wegmans, where he dedicated 26 years of service. His career culminated at Lanovara Foods before his retirement.
In 1969, Tim met Patti while she was working part-time at Star Market during high school. The couple married in 1973 and enjoyed a loving partnership for 51 years, raising two daughters, Corrina LaManna and Gina Principe, both of whom are married to their respective spouses, Andy and Dave. Tim cherished family trips to Disney, Virginia Beach, and New York City, where he created lasting memories with his loved ones. He was particularly fond of camping adventures with family and friends.
Tim was an avid music lover, with a special affinity for Eric Clapton concerts. He traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to see Eagles perform and made a point of visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite his passion for music, Tim humorously claimed he could only “really play the radio”—and he played it loud! He was also a sports enthusiast, particularly enjoying ice skating and hockey. His extensive knowledge of New York Yankees statistics from the 1960s was impressive, as was his love for history and politics. He was known to watch hours of cable news, always staying informed. He was even able to complete and mail in his 2024 ballot.
In addition to being a devoted father, Tim actively participated in his daughters’ activities, serving as a CYO parent for cheerleading at Holy Cross. He volunteered at basketball games, demonstrating his commitment to community and youth development even after his children outgrew the program.
Tim was a dedicated family man and a proud “girl dad,” who adored his five grandchildren. Their presence filled his heart with joy, and he made it a priority to check in with his daughters and their families daily. Tim’s legacy is defined by his kindness, courage, humor, and love. He navigated life with positivity, even as he faced the challenges of chronic kidney disease. His resilience and determination were an inspiration to all who knew him.
He had a soft spot for animals, having grown up with cats, and he was the proud owner of two current pets: Jack, who adopted the family ten years ago, and Winnie, the family’s COVID cat adopted from Verona Street Rescue.
Tim O’Brien’s family and friends feel a profound sense of loss at his passing, knowing that the world will be slightly less bright without the light of this amazing man. His favorite saying, “What time are the kids coming over?” encapsulated his deep love for family and connection. His enduring friendships from high school and his time at Star Market are a testament to his genuine nature and the impact he had on those around him. Tim’s journey through life was marked by unwavering love for his family, friends, and community, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
