Walter Warner Barwald

Walter Warner Barwald, 93, of Webster, NY, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026, just four days shy of his 94th birthday, surrounded by his loving family.

Walter was born in Rochester, NY, on September 22, 1932, to Max and Emma Barwald. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Warren.

Walter was the beloved husband of Aneata Meisch Barwald, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage. Their love story began long before their wedding day. Walt often said that he knew he was going to marry Aneata the very first time he saw her-from afar. It was a story he loved to tell, and one he retold over and over again at holiday dinners. Walt’s devotion to Aneata was evident throughout their 74 years of marriage. As Walt’s health declined over the years he fought very hard after repeated hospitalizations and two long rehab stays in order to get back to “the love of my life”. He surprised many by his strength and strong will to make this happen. His love and devotion to Aneata remained evident even in Walt’s final days.

After serving four years as an Airman in the United States Air Force, including time stationed in Arizona, Walter was honorably discharged in 1956. He was extremely proud of his years in the service and especially enjoyed recounting stories of his time working on and servicing aircraft of all kinds and traveling the world. Those memories remained an important and treasured part of his life.

He then moved to Hilton, NY, where he began his career as a Foreman with Eastman Kodak. He worked there for 35 years before moving on to Tender Loving Care – the one job that he described as “the best job in the world”, scheduling home health aides and nurses who were as passionate about caring for others as he was. Walt completed his work life driving for National School Bus, serving children in need where he quickly became loved by not only the children but their grateful families who often thanked him for his kindness, which was evident at Christmas time by the many gifts showered upon him.

Walt was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Together, he and Aneata built a family whose lives were filled with celebrations, laughter, friends, and family. He is survived by his loving wife, Aneata; his children, Wayne Barwald and Laura (John) Santoli; his grandchildren, Tyler (Carrie), Megan, Alyssa (Dustin) Lewis, and Chelsea Monheim (Steven Cone); and his great-granddaughter, Harlow Lewis.

Walt’s love knew no bounds. He had a remarkable way of making the people around him feel welcome, valued, and loved. Those fortunate enough to spend time with him often left feeling better simply for having him in their lives. Walt’s love also extended to all animals which was evident by the dozens and dozens of organizations he supported every year. He was especially proud of his support to Lollypop Farm and his invite to their black-tie event. He would also spend hours feeding and caring for any creature that was fortunate enough to find their way to his home- taking great pleasure in their company and making sure they were cared for.

Walt always approached life with upmost positive outlook. The nurses and caregivers who looked after Walt were always quick to notice his happiness, his warmth, and the incredible spirit he continued to carry with him. Before long, everyone knew Walt, and those who cared for him developed an immediate affection for him. He had a way of making even those who were there to care for him feel like family.

The family extends a very special and heartfelt thank-you to Marleen, Kay, and Michelle and all other staff of M&M Gentle Touch Homecare at Baywinds, and Nurse Tracy Avery. Your kindness, compassion, and loving care brought comfort to Walt and to all of us who loved him. Our family will always be eternally grateful. Another thank -you to Penfield Place Nursing Home and especially Physical Therapist Sandy- who dad described as “the best therapist in the world !” who because of their care, allowed dad the opportunity to return to Aneata once again.

He will be deeply loved, fondly remembered, and greatly missed.

There will be a private Funeral and interment for family on Friday, September 25.
