Zygmunt W. Mikiciuk
Passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of strength, perseverance, and devotion to family on Friday, June 12, 2026, at age 90.
Zygmunt W. Mikiciuk lived a life defined by perseverance, hard work, devotion to family, and an unwavering belief that anything could be accomplished through determination and self-reliance.
Born on May 2, 1936, in Wiski, Poland, Zygmunt was the son of Wiktor Mikiciuk and Katarzyna Oniszczuk. Raised on his family’s farm alongside his brothers, Zbigniew and Stanislaw, he learned the value of hard work at an early age. His childhood was shaped by the hardships of World War II, experiences that instilled in him a resilience and strength of character that would remain with him throughout his life.
As a young man, Zygmunt proudly served in the Polish Army as a border patrol officer. In 1961, seeking opportunity and a brighter future, he immigrated to the United States. Though he arrived in a new country far from home, he carried with him a strong work ethic, determination, and the courage to build a life from the ground up.
After settling in Rochester, New York, Zygmunt met Teresa, who would become a cherished partner in his life. Together they shared many happy years filled with travel, friendship, family, and countless memories. They enjoyed spending time with friends, exploring new places, and creating a life centered on the people they loved most.
Zygmunt enjoyed a distinguished career as a diesel mechanic with the City of Rochester, where he earned the respect of coworkers and developed many lasting friendships. Known for his skill, dependability, and ability to fix just about anything, he took great pride in his work. Even after retirement, he continued serving his community as a school bus driver for Monroe Transportation.
A man who loved working with his hands, Zygmunt could often be found building, repairing, gardening, or tackling a new project. He enjoyed camping, bingo, and traveling, and he found simple pleasure in creating and fixing things. He was a devoted fan of classic Westerns, never passing up an opportunity to watch a John Wayne or Clint Eastwood movie, and he loved listening to the music of Johnny Cash. He also had one well-known dislike: broccoli.
Those who knew him best knew that he possessed a wonderful blend of strength, loyalty, humor, determination, and occasional stubbornness. He was a survivor who faced life’s challenges head-on and refused to be defeated by adversity. He often shared words of wisdom that reflected the way he approached life: “Cut the crap,” “Where there is a will, there is a way,” and “Always expect the unexpected.”
While he accomplished much throughout his life, nothing brought him greater pride or joy than his family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Monika Mikiciuk.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Teresa Mikiciuk; his sons, Robert (Andria), Anthony (Wendy), Richard (Partner, Jo), and Peter (Whitney); his grandchildren, Anthony (Krista), Andrew, Allison, Amanda (Max Brown), and Joe; “Dziadzius Munchkins,” Olivia, Gabriela, and Fiona; and his great-grandchildren, Ryan, Henry, and Luella.
Among the greatest blessings in his life were his wife, Teresa, and his beloved Munchkins (granddaughters), Olivia, Gabriela, and Fiona. His happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, sharing stories, laughter, and time together.
Though he often joked that one of life’s greatest challenges was not being able to stay young forever, his youthful spirit and love for life remained with him until the very end.
Zygmunt’s legacy is not found simply in the years he lived, but in the example he set. He demonstrated that no matter how difficult or complicated life may become, hard work, perseverance, and belief in yourself can overcome any obstacle. It is a lesson he lived every day and one that will continue to inspire his family for generations to come.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Zygmunt’s life story will be shared during visitation on Monday, June 22nd from 4-7 pm at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane, 14626. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 23rd at 10 am at St. Lawrence Church, 1000 N. Greece Rd., 14626
