Bessie and I attended the same high school, (Benjamin Franklin) though we did not know each other at the time
I first met Bessie last September at the 62nd reunion luncheon of the class of ’52.
I was one of the organizers of the reunion and was very concerned that everything run smoothly though it looked like that would not be the case.
First, I needed someone to give an ecumenical blessing. Luckily, James had accompanied his mother to the reunion and was engaged, with only minutes notice, to perform that duty which he ablely performed.
After lunch and a short business meeting it looked like it was my turn to take over the podium. I was dreading this moment because some entertainment I had planned was not going to materialize. it was then that James and Bessie approached the microphone. James gave a short description of his mother’s pride in her alma mater, Bessie then astonished us all with her ability to sing all the verses to the school song, remberence of cheers and even the words to fight songs.
It was Bessie and James who loosened up the audience and created an aura of fraternity among us. To them I am so grateful.
I so wish I had expressed my feelings to them both while I had the opportunity. I was, as I’m sure others in the audience were, greatful to have experienced the love and respect of a mother for her son and a son for his Mom.
Where to begin? Betsy was an amazing woman. She was my sponsor for confirmation & the wedding coordinator for my marriage to Jason in 2003. Over the years & with many miles separating us we still stayed in touch. I will miss her greatly.
Cindy and family,
Find peace in knowing that the Lord has some very special angels working for him now. Prayers to you and the all whose lives she touched.
