Eleanor "Ellie" C. (Schubert) Birr Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 18 2024 at age 98. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Donald E. Birr, and sisters Rita Rapp and Loretta Zalycki. She will be remembered by her daughters Bonnie Birr and Carol Tracy (Michael), granddaughters Heather and Katie Tracy as well as cousins and many nieces and nephews. Ellie worked at Eastman Kodak while in her 20s, during that time she met her future husband. After swearing she was done with dating she agreed to go on a double date with a friend of hers and met Don Birr. They began courting and spent their time on Don's boat in Irondequoit Bay. They were then married in 1950. Together they made a home full of love, laughter and music as they had friends, neighbors and family over for card games, holidays and times of singing around the player piano. Their dream of having a family came true when their first daughter Bonnie was born and continued three years later when Carol was born. While her daughters were in school Ellie enjoyed volunteering and helping others, a passion that continued throughout the rest of her life. Ellie enjoyed serving with her hands and volunteered at Hope Lutheran Church in many areas. She was a part of the mailing ministry, working with others to assemble and send out information for the church. She also enjoyed helping to prepare crafts for the preschool program where she could. Her attention to detail could be seen in her hand-made cards, paper boxes and needle work. She loved spending time with her granddaughters, reading chapter books, playing countless games and setting a good example while memorizing scripture. Ellie and Don spent many happy hours driving their granddaughters around looking for the best playground and ice cream spots while singing aloud to cassette tapes. Ellie shared her love of handicrafts by teaching them how to embroider and crochet. She also carefully crafted the best way to throw a slobbery ball during a game of fetch for each of her furry grand-dogs. She was known to have a smile on her face often, and enjoyed playing practical jokes on people- though no one would ever suspect sweet Ellie! She will be remembered for her organization, love and wonderful sense of humor. Eleanor's funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 25th at 10:30 AM at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane (between 390 & Long Pond Rd.) Entombment to follow at Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Holy Childhood, 100 Groton Pkwy., Rochester, New York 14623.
