William M. MacInnes Relation to Deceased: None On behalf of the USS Block Island Association, my wife Judy and I would like to express our sympathy to Betty Lingard and her family on the passing of Frank. Frank’s ship, USS Elmore (DE 686) attacked and sank the Nazi sub that torpedoed the USS Block Island (CVE 21) [sank on 5/29/44]. On that same night, the Elmore also came to the rescue of the USS Barr that had also been torpedoed by a Nazi Sub. The Elmore towed the Barr for two days. Personnel on the Elmore were authorized to wear two engagement stars on their European-African-Middle Eastern Area campaign ribbon. Their Commanding Officer, Lt. Cmdr. George L.
