Giuseppina Gulina, Her Life Story
Giuseppina (our mother) was born on February 28, 1930 in Castellana, Sicily. Our family immigrated to Rochester in 1963. Mom was home for years with us and then worked as a seamstress and retired from Hickey Freeman Company where she met and continued to have wonderful close friends.
Our mother was a loving, caring and gentle person, she always made sure that we were all home and safe, and always asked if she could help in any way. With every conversation, the grandchildren would always come up, she would always ask how they were and what was going on with them. Mom's love for her family was amazing and the most important part of her week was when we all got together on Sundays for sauce...she would drop everything and cook if any of the grandchildren would call to say to her "can you make pasta for me Nonna" her answer was always yes and what time are you coming"........ She enjoyed having the family all together.
Mom's morning routine was to wake up, have a cup of coffee and watch her daily mass on TV and she would read her prayers books for hours, her other passions were cooking, she also loved crocheting, knitting, word searches and vegetable gardening. After mom dad could not manage the huge garden, Mom's gardening extended to planting seeds between the shrubs and plants surrounding the house, so she always was gardening and growing vegetables. She was so proud of the fruits and vegetables she had grown as well as flowers, but she used to get annoyed when the deer would eat her plants, but she never gave up, she used to say, can't believe they ate my whole plant but then should would also say, I guess that they have to eat too the poor little animals.
A special thank you from our family to all our zio's and zia's, and our cousins, and friends who have been able to help out. Thank you Zio Dino for helping out with the fruit trees and things around the house and also Zia Maria Profita for taking the time to visit, shop and take her to appointments as well as mom's neighbors, Diane Barry, John, Giuliana..for helping when they could. -A very special appreciation and thank you to my husband, Grahame, for continuing to help maintain mom's home.
A sincere thank you and gratefulness to Dr. Anthony Ragusa, and his staff who cared for mom in the many years, and for taking such good care of her.
Thank you also to Connie for faithfully coming on Sunday mornings to give Mom communion. Mom was also was able to join the church group "Seniors On The Move" meetings where she had a chance to socialize and spend time with other parishioners. Mom enjoyed going to the meetings and having lunch with the other ladies.
We want to thank each and everyone of you for all the love and happiness we have shared together with our mom. We will always remember our mother and nonna and will miss her each and every day. We will always treasure our memories of mom and will keep them with us in our hearts the rest of our lives. Mom and Dad are now united in heaven and we are so blessed to have had parents as caring, loving and devoted as they were....
