Additional Information
Johanna Martha Hayden (nee Grunwald), age 83, of Main Street, Norfolk, passed peacefully on March 31. She was the wife of deceased Ellis Brown Hayden, Jr. Born on a farm in Heinrichsdorf, East Prussia (once a German area, but now part of Poland) on December 15, 1926, she was one of seven brothers and sisters of the late Gustav and Auguste (Malinowski) Grunwald.
After completing primary and secondary education at the Volksschule in Heinrichsdorf, Johanna began to work as a bookkeeper for a local dairy during World War II. In January 1945, her family had to flee the local area and became war refugees. From the end of the war until June 1953, she served as a Russian-Polish-German translator for the Soviet military supply program in the Berlin suburb of Potsdam. Hanna eventually escaped Soviet-occupied East Germany and in 1956 immigrated to the United States and resided with her uncle in Miami, FL. Shortly after his death, she relocated to Chicago, IL, where she was employed as a bookkeeper. There she met her future husband, Ellis Brown Hayden, Jr., a long-time executive of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. The two subsequently married on May 23, 1959.
The couple started a family in Chicago and a company transfer led the Haydens to Birmingham, MI in 1962. Hanna became a naturalized U.S. Citizen two years later. A further job transfer in 1967 brought Johanna and her family to Norfolk, MA. Over the next decade, she was a devoted mother and homemaker, who enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing. When her three children grew older, Johanna returned to the work force as a part-time bookkeeper at the Charles Weber Insurance Company and later for the Town of Norfolk Water Department. She also worked as a mental health aide at the Foxborough Campus of the Wrentham State School.
Johanna was an active member of the Norfolk Federated Church and became the first woman to serve as Church Trustee. For many consecutive years, she participated in a variety of church activities, and especially enjoyed volunteering at the annual fall Harvest Festival.
Over time, Hanna's sewing skills led to her membership in the Rockhill Crafts Co-op of Foxborough, which specialized in the retail of quality handcrafts. In addition to her sewn goods, she crafted varieties of beeswax candles. She remained an active member of the co-op for the next twenty years and at times served in a leadership capacity. Due to her deepening involvement in crafts, she joined the Foxboro Crafts Association, a nonprofit educational organization committed to the promotion of local area craft making.
Throughout her life, Johanna drew great joy and pleasure by providing constant friendship and generous support to family and friends. Her kind spirit touched many individuals who will hold this lasting memory of her.
