I have struggled to find words regarding the passing of John. He has been in my prayers since Sonia told me of his illness. I so loved him as a brother and friend. He and I laughed together so much and I so missed that! I am thinking of him every day and the way he loved his family. He would do anything for anyone and he has truly blessed my life. I will say my quiet prayers to him and to all of you. I love you all God bless Joao.
Our deepest condolences, such a kind Heart
Our cousin will live in our hearts forever.
We will never forget the memories we have made together

John was an amazing human being with a heart of gold. His passion for music and entertaining was felt by everyone that heard him play and sing. Thank you John for inspiring me at such a young age to follow my dreams and pursue a career in music. Your unwavering support and positive energy will never be forgotten. RIP my friend.
John, my dear brother-in-law, whom I’ve known for many years and will always remember you until my last day on earth. Not a day goes by that I pause and ask myself, why did John have to go so soon?
Donna and I have many great memories of you, especially for your caring ways. You were a proud family man who always put your family first, your work ethic was second to none and your love for life was immeasurable.
I will miss coming to visit you and watch a soccer game together or when we called to congratulate each other on a Benfica or Sporting win. Even though I live ~80 miles from you, you and family always made it a point to visit.
I will never forget the days when you were dating Bernardete and you came to my parent’s home with your bell bottom pants and record player and played some of your favorite songs from Jose Roberto – Deixa o meu cabelo em pas, Eu nao presto mas te Amo ….
You were a great uncle to Sean, Daniel & Nicole and always treated them as if they were your own. How they loved watching soccer games and hanging with you at the house. You always made it so exciting. Thank you for sharing your love of European football with them – they will always love the game as much as you did.
Rest in Peace and may God Bless your soul. Love you!
John,
Where do I begin . . . . You have been part of our family for over 50 years. You made my sister happy, Liz and Victor were a product of your love and your family continues to grow now with Mateo and Alayna.
You always took great pride in family gatherings and in preparing foods that everyone loved; lulas grilhads, espetada, bacalhau, tuna escabeche and of course always offering an espresso to cap off the meal.
Even though I was a kid, I remember when you left to go to Mozambique as a young soldier, being with Bernardete in Funchal as she waved goodbye to you. I think one of the songs she sang for the longest time after you left was “Olhitos Negros que eu deixei na minha terra”. It was great to see the two of you reunite in 1974, and I had the great pleasure as a teenager to be able to attend your wedding.
You brought so much joy with your passion for music. I will always remember your travels around the city of Rochester with some of our family and friends to Portuguese families homes on Christmas Eve to sing traditional Portuguese songs and keep a little bit of our culture alive.
I could go on and on with the positive impact you had on so many people; but I will end with:
. Gone to soon my brother
. Gone but will not be forgotten
. Rest in Peace ….. Descanca in paz!!
My deepest condolences to the Alves family. I unfortunately was never blessed to have met Mr. Alves but through the discussion about the garden and seeing those pictures, Liz helped me see how nurturing, caring and loving he was. Liz, sending lots of love and prayers to you and your family.
Allison and Vic our heart breaks for both of you. He was a wonderful person and he will be truly missed. I am sure the kids will wonder about him and Mateo will have many questions. Just speak from your heart. Just remember your dad will always be with you in your heart. We are so sorry again
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Alves family during this difficult time. John’s smile, enthusiasm and passion were contagious, He brought out the joy and best in everyone.
Our deepest condolences to the family Alves John was a great friend he will be missed but he leaves a legacy that now one can replace may he rest in PEACE 🙏
My heart breaks with you at the loss of your Dad. Your Father lived a long life and such a beautiful legacy he leaves behind. No words that I can offer will make this hurt go away, but know that I am here for you at this devastating time…and although we can’t be together during this difficult time, I am holding you and your family close in my heart. Love you – Lakisha Gilkes & Family
