Abreu, Mary H. (Marino)
Greece: Mary H. Abreu died peacefully on November 18, 2015. She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Joseph, in 2005. Mary is survived by her two sons, Dan (Katherine), Lawrence (Michele); four grandchildren, Meredith (Alexander) Ressi-di Cervia, Lauren (Roger) De Freese, Vanessa and Nicholas Abreu; four great grandchildren, Camino, Radley, Madeira Ressi-di Cervia and Gavin De Freese; several nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mary was the youngest of 5 girls, born to immigrant parents. Elsie (Bacarri) and Charles Marino. She was raised on Glide St. on the west side of Rochester. She and her sisters Jane, Anne, Angie Helen attended Holy Family school. She graduated from Madison High school. Later she worked as an Executive Secretary for Ritter Company and then Taylor Instrument Company. She retired after over 40 years of service to both companies. She remained lifelong friends with co-workers Betty Grant and Marie Rawinski.
Joe and Mary met at a wedding and were married themselves in 1948. Soon after, they had 2 sons Dan and Larry and in time, several grandchildren. They were rarely found home on a Saturday night, but always attended mass with the family on Sunday. For most of the their married lives, she and her sisters lived within 2 miles of each other creating a Marino conclave of sorts on various streets running off Glide Street. They interwove family and friendships, at times it was hard to distinguish friends from family. In the end it didn't matter because the common bond was mutual love and support.
Post-retirement, Mary and Joe traveled extensively starting with a drive cross country, during which they stopped in various places to re-connect with family and friends. They subsequently traveled to Trinidad (where Dad was stationed during WWII), Asia, Alaska and Portugal, in addition to travel in the lower 48.
Mary was a communicant at St. Augustine's Church and later St. Monica's where she attended with friends Patty Grant, Dan Zollo, Betty Grant and Marie Rawinski. She played Canasta with June Giambra and friends from the Circle of Hope. Lunches with Frank and Jean LaBarge at the Olive Garden were special to her. Nieces, Joyce and Jean Manning and nephew Glenn visited regularly while Mary was in Assisted Living and at the Cottages. Mom never turned down a social invitation, sometimes double booking!
Mary was a talented conversationalist and would often prepare herself researching background topics to enrich the social discourse with friends. She was quick-witted, loved to play on words and point out the ironies of life. She was an original fashionista. She loved to accessorize and was always stylish in her appearance. Always wanting to stay current, she would practice the latest and hippest handshakes with Nick and Vanessa.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Hamlet and the Cottages for their tender and compassionate care. Our gratitude is also extended to friends Patty Grant, Dan Zollo, Frank and Jean LaBarge for their unfailing companionship and support.
