Penfield: August 15, 2021: Mary Louise was predeceased by her parents, Marjorie and Vincent La Valle of Charlotte and North Rose; her brother, Lynn F. La Valle; and her sister, Carol Yvonne Hill.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Darlene) McPherson; her wonderful grandchildren, Rowan (Alex) Peters and Taylor McPherson; sister-in-law, Carol La Valle; nieces, Michele A. Payne of Sparta, Tenessee; Donna (Donald) Bishop of Boulder City, Nevada; Louise (Douglas) Kress of Rochester; Renee(Peter) Roberts of Chantilly, Virginia; nephew Andrew (Lisa) Marks of North Rose and six great-nephews.
Mary Lou graduated from Holy Cross Grammar School and Nazareth Academy High School. She received a B.S. Degree in Physical Therapy from St. Louis University and a Masters Degree in Public Administration in Health from SUNY Brockport. She also earned a certificate in Gerontology from St. John Fisher College.
She was a compassionate Physical Therapist in the Rochester area for forty years. Among her honors, Mary Lou was presented with the first Ella Hollister Award at Rochester General Hospital in 1984. The award was made by the Social Work Department and the Rochester General Hospital Association for outstanding human service. The award stated that Mary Lou exemplified the ideals of Social Work and caring for patients beyond her job responsibilities.
Mary Lou fought valiantly against the crippling effects of Transverse Myelitis, a rare neurological disorder caused by inflammation of the spinal cord, which struck her without warning in September of 2004. She was determined to maintain as normal a life as she could under the pressure of the debilitating disease. She continued to live alone and drove her modified automobile well into her life with the many effects of the disease. A visit to Mary Lou during this period was always a pleasure as her courage was infectious as was her smile even under the pain she was suffering.
She asked to give a special thank you to all of the close family members and dear friends who have so impacted and enriched the value and quality of her life. Without them, her long battle with Transverse Myelitis would not have been tolerable.
Mary Lou chose to have her services and interment be private. She will be buried in a family plot in Huron Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Transverse Myelitis Association, Sanford Siegel, President, 1787 Sutter Parkway, Powell, Ohio 43065-8806.
