Remembering Ron~
Rodney M. Atkins, born and raised with an unwavering love for life and learning, had a remarkable career and a life rich in diverse interests. A man of many talents and passions, Rodney found joy in everything from aviation to family traditions, and he was always there to lend a helping hand. His career, spanning over 40 years, reflects his versatility and dedication, while his personal life was marked by his deep commitment to his family and community.
Rodney’s passion for aviation began early, and he became a licensed private pilot, an achievement that fueled his lifelong enthusiasm for all forms of flight. His love of flying was complemented by his adventurous spirit, which extended to hobbies like target shooting, camping, and fishing. He also enjoyed sharing these interests with his family, passing down his skills and love for outdoor activities to his children and grandchildren.
Among the cherished traditions in Rodney’s life was his annual Christmas cream puff-making. For over 25 years, he and his wife, Sandra, dedicated themselves to creating over 350 cream puffs each holiday season. This tradition brought joy to family and friends and became a highlight of the Christmas season. In recent years, Rodney began training his son, Christopher, to carry on this beloved family ritual, ensuring that the spirit of generosity and care would continue through the generations.
A devoted Buffalo Bills fan, Rodney was known for his spirited enthusiasm for his team, celebrating their victories and supporting them through their challenges. He also enjoyed the simpler pleasures of life, like indulging in his favorite buffet—Pizza Hut’s lunch buffet—a place where he could savor good food and great company.
Prior to Rodney beginning his career he served his country in the Army. He enlisted in 1973 and was honorably discharged in 1977. The last three years he served overseas in Germany. He proudly received, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Marksman M203, & Sharpshooter M16.
Rodney’s career in Information Technology (IT) was equally diverse and impressive. He began his professional journey at Ragu Foods before moving on to EDS, where he spent over 20 years honing his skills. His career culminated in a position at Paetec/Windstream, where he worked until his retirement in 2020. Known for his work philosophy, “A Jack of all trades and a Master of None,” Rodney approached every challenge with a practical, hands-on attitude, always eager to learn and adapt.
Outside of work, Rodney was always the person people could turn to when they needed help. Whether it was fixing a computer issue, assisting with a move, or driving someone to an appointment, he was the first to offer his time and support. His willingness to help extended to his role as a mentor to many, teaching family members and even his children’s friends how to drive, ensuring that they were ready to take on the road with confidence.
Rodney was also a loving and caring grandfather, cherished by his grandchildren. One of his favorite activities was playing “ROAR” with them, a fun, energetic game that became a hallmark of his loving interactions with his family. He enjoyed playing chess and all forms of card games, particularly scat, frustration, and poker, creating lasting memories through friendly competition.
Rodney’s legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and a deep love for his family and friends. His commitment to service, whether in his professional life, his community, or his own home, set him apart as a man who cared deeply for those around him. Rodney M. Atkins will always be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with kindness, humor, and an open heart.
