After graduation from East Rochester High School, Romeo joined the United States Army serving in Company A 351st Infantry. During his time in the Army, Romeo was stationed in Cortina, Italy. He so enjoyed his time spent in Italy that he revisited Cortina and surrounding areas later in life. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Romeo was encouraged by his childhood and lifelong friend, Nick Verzella, to join him in attending Brockport State College. This led to a teaching career that spanned 35 years. Romeo first taught in the Niagara Falls, NY School District. While living in Niagara Falls he met his eventual wife, Anna Angela Ciccarelli. Romeo later took a teaching position with Greece Central School District and moved back to East Rochester. Shortly after, he and Anna married and she joined him in East Rochester. Romeo and Anna began their life together eventually moving to Greece, NY where Romeo would be closer to his school. A larger home was also needed as the couple had begun their family. Anna and Romeo would eventually be blessed with three children; John, Michael and RomyAnn who would become the focus of their lives. When Anna passed away early in life, Romeo was faced with raising three children on his own. Although his Mother-in-law, Jennie Ciccarelli, provided a great deal of help, Romeo worked to balance his job, care and provide for his children and spend time with them as well. To his credit, Romeo made numerous personal sacrifices to ensure his children's well being. While his children were aware of these sacrifices, most people were not. Romeo was a very private person and did not seek recognition for such things. What Romeo enjoyed most in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He found great joy in giving to his family. When his children would suggest things he should do for himself rather than for them, he would nod his head and say "you're right, I'll think about it". He knew full well he had no intention of doing so. Romeo faced more adversity when his middle child Michael passed away. Michael's passing had a lasting effect on Romeo as he was so close to his children and grandchildren. Soon after, his brother Gasper, whom he was also close with, passed away. During his years in education, Romeo was revered by administrators, colleagues and parents for his dedication to and concern for his students. He was admired throughout his life for his strength in working through adversity, his selflessness and his kindness to others.
