I always looked forward to summer. It was my favorite time of year. I was able to spend every summer as a child with Grandpa and Grandma. Grandpa would stock up on chocolate fudge ice cream and Klondike bars. Dad said Grandpa would “test” the sweets before I came to make sure they were “good.” We had so much fun together. From going shopping and trying on clothes while Grandpa held our purses, going to the pool every afternoon, playing cards with their friends, and having dinner on Fridays at the Knights of Columbus. I truly am so fortunate that I have so many wonderful memories of my Grandpa. He was a wonderful man.
I knew Mr. Warren Spurr though his son Bob who is a very close friend on mine. Bob loved his Dad very much and I know he was always there for him. I’m sure Mr. Spurr was very proud of his son and his family and will be looking down on them as he joins his wife in Heaven. We will always have the Spurr family in our prayers and will be thinking about them during this period where they will be saying their goodbyes to their Dad and Grandfather here on earth.
Forty-five years ago this month Warren took Bobby and me to the Washington Senators first game of the season at RFK Stadium. Richard Nixon threw out the first ball, Ted Williams managed his first game and I got to skip school. Mr. Spurr treated us to hot dogs, popcorn and anything else two kids at a ballgame could want.
Throughout the lives of all the Hage kids, and even more throughout my parents’ lives, Mr. Spurr was unfailingly generous, kind and thoughtful. Of course he was that way with his own family: I remember when I learned that he called home from work every day just to say hello to Mrs. Spurr. Weird, I thought, only later realizing those calls as the mark of a devoted and loving husband.
Mr. Spurr certainly made a similar impression with God and is doubtless now in His good hands. But I know when he’s not visiting Bobby in Rochester he’ll be back every Sunday at St. Pat’s in Rockville to usher the 11 o’clock mass.
A story I was told- One day Warren & Bode decided to bake a CHOCOLATE cake after school. They mixed everything up (from scratch obviously since there was no Pillsbury mix in 1930’s). They put it in the oven for the correct amount of time & then took it out. Unfortunately, they had forgotten to turn on the stove/oven….. So it was eaten with a spoon…. yummy yummy. I think this is where Dad first developed his fondness for chocolate.
I knew Warren through my friendship with his son, Bob. I have heard Bob’s love and care for his father for years and I know that love was shared by all of his family. My condolences and prayers to all of the family. Warren is survived by many wonderful people, so he will not be forgotten.
Warren was a client of mine and over the years we not only developed a strong professional relationship but I was glad to call him my friend. I will miss him greatly and all of our entertaining conversations together.
Mr Spurr — you were a fascinating man. I will always remember your visits to Topsail. Thank you for the gift of my good friend Bob, Lynn and the children. I’m sure there is a wonderful reunion in heaven right now! Daisy Kiley
