Additional Information
David was born on November 10, 1960 at St. Mary's Hospital and grew up at 414 Hawley Street. He had 2 siblings, Deborah, Susan.
David was the youngest of the 3 children and was raised by his Mother and often taken in by other relatives during the many times his Mother was ill. He had a hard childhood as his natural father had to leave Rochester to pursue welding work in other parts of the country. He was often separated from his sisters because in those days it was not easy to raise one child let alone three. In 1975, Emmett returned to Rochester with his new wife and 4-month old daughter, Autumn. In 1989, at the age of 14, Autumn returned to Rochester for good and was taken in by David's family - sister Deborah. Emmett followed four months later where he lived until his death in July of 2000.
In his teen years, David was kind of a loner and would often stay at friends' houses for weeks on end because those friends' families understood the difficulty of having an ill mother trying to raise three children. But, through all of the heartache, he was always easy to get along with and a joy to both of his sisters, Deborah Susan. The three of them were determined to make it through the worst of times because of the closeness and the love they shared together.
In 1995, David received his Assocates Degree in Liberal Arts from Monroe Community College. In 1997, he received his Bachelor's Degree majoring in Communications with a minor in Journalism from St. John Fisher College.
David met Brian and they maintained a loving relationship for 23 years. On their 22nd anniversary on 9/10/11, they were legally married in a lovely ceremony. They both loved pets and over the years shared a sheep dog named Ziggy, a Wheaton Terrier, and several stray cats. Today they love and care for Maxwell and 20 lb. Oscar.
As a licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist, David loved to cut hair and to do makeup for brides. He did this for many weddings over the course of his life. He was a very talented hairdresser and kept his license current until last year. In the 1990's, he enjoyed taking yearly trips to Tampa St. Pete with is parents, cousin Chuck, and girlfriend Tammy. He also took trips to St. Maarten in '95, '97, '99. The greatest day of his life was his being the first member of his family to graduate from college and receive a Bachelor's Degree. The happiest day of his life was marrying the man he loved the most in the world, his husband Brian.
In his spare time, David also loved photography. He had a great eye for detail and how things should look aesthetically. He loved interior decorating and was also an excellent cook.
Some of David's favorites included football (Oakland Raiders) and baseball (NY Yankees), watching the 4 Grand Slam Tennis, jazz, Disco, and 80's music and artists such as Diana Krall, Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr, Aretha Franklin, Patty LaBelle, and Lady Gaga. Some of his favorite TV shows were I Love Lucy, The Waltons, Everybody Loves Raymond, and The King of Queens. He enjoyed movies, especially Steel Magnolias, The Game, The Bodyguard, and The Polar Express.
David was one of the most personable individuals and always saw the good in people, even in some cases people that were not so good. He had a zest for life and loved life. He loved his family deeply and understood and respected the meaning of family.
David was the kind of guy that no matter where he was he would always run into someone that he knew.
He had a fantastic sense of humor and the most beautiful smile. His laugh was addictive and it was a giggle with devilish undertones.
David could meet someone for the first time and strike up a conversation with them out of the blue and that person would forever remember him. He had the gift to gab...He loved talking and gossiping and always wanted to know the dirt if it was a really juicy story or event.
He was by far one of the most creative people in the world, there was nothing he could not do and no matter what it was it always came out looking perfect and aesthetically pleasing.
He loved Graphics Design and taught an accelerated course during a summer semester at MCC College as an adjunct professor with hopes of obtaining a position at MCC. Unfortunately, the position was given to somebody else. During his final two years at St. John Fisher College he did an internship at WOKR channel 13 where he was responsible for writing the news on their web site as well as writing the stories for the news men and women. He really enjoyed that part of his life and really did at that time want to become a reporter for the news.
After graduating in 1997, he went to work for his first Graphics design job off of West Main Street, after that he worked for Advanced Quick Printing running a copy shop and doing color correction and layouts for various companies within the Bausch Lomb World Head Quarters Bldg.
In 2000 David and Brian moved out of the city apartment on Arnett and Thurston Road and built a house on Springblossom Circle. He loved the house we designed and he took pride in working to keep that roof over his head. David was an all-in kind of guy, if he told you he was going to do it, he always did.
In 2003 he was offered a job in Sales for St. Vincent Press, but did not like the sales end of it and eventually he became Prepress Manager, color correcting, creating logos or various design elements.
Print media was by far his greatest love but unfortunately in 2009 he was laid off from his place of employment and he never bounced back from that. He tried to find another job through some of the remaining printing places left in the city, but the market for prepress managers was saturated and most places were not hiring.
In 2011 he married the man of his dreams, Brian, and was so happy to have lived to see the day that people of the LGBT community could legally marry in NY State. We had a very small intimate service of about 50 people with a sit down dinner held at the Pittsford Grill. That day was his proudest day in his life. He always spoke of it, he was happy that we were able to make history by performing our service in front of God, our families and friends.
David will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.
